Full dmesg log

The ath10k_pci module seems to put the kernel in a unrecoverable state after a specific exception occurs in it. This happens while using the network. After the kernel becomes unstable it won't lock completely but will hang at almost every system call (for example the ls command will work fine in the terminal, but things like sudo or reboot will just hang endlessly) and you have to shut the system through the power button.

This happened 3 times randomly while I was browsing the web while connected to a VPN. I'm not sure how to reproduce the bug, so I'll attach a full dmesg log that I've got from last freeze.

The relevant part seems to be this:

Happens also for me with 5.0.x, 5.1.x and 5.2-rc7 kernels on Dell Precision 5520.

What's interesting, it does seem to happen on some WIFI networks only - with some wireless networks everything is stable; some other networks will cause similar freezes and need several restarts every day.

Comment 4 Tomasz Chmielewski 2019-08-27 08:59:26 UTC
This only seems to happen in the following conditions:

- wireless router uses both 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies

- on both frequencies, SSID is the same

After disabling 5 GHz in the wireless router, ath10k no longer crashes in my laptop.

On 5.7.8 the firmware crashes but doesn't leave the kernel in the strange state as on 5.6. This happens with a router that uses both 2.4 and 5GHz frequencies under different SSIDs.

2.4 an 5Ghz wifi networks with same SSID

also requires a reconnect to regain an internet connection

xps 9380 ath10k_pci firmware crash

It appears to only crash when wifi powermanagement is on. Forcing it to stay off might be a temporary fix. Sadly that's easier said than done, but for me the biggest part is making a rule in TLP.

Hello.
I also have this problem on a DELL Vostro 5502 laptop (driver also ath10k_pci) with a QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter. The only point I wanted to add: I experimented with different WIFI standards and found out a pattern. The problem ceased to manifest itself when I changed the protocols as follows:
2.4 Ghz - was 802.11b/g/n/ax, now - 802.11b
5 Ghz - was 802.11n/ac/ax, now 802.11a

Just in case, I’ll write that I use a 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz network with the same SSID. Now I tried to disable on the router the ability to connect my device to a network with 5 Ghz - until the effect is positive and the problem does not recur. I also note, just in case, that Keenetic Giga (KN-1011) is used as a router.

Perhaps this will help in localizing the problem.

I really want this issue to be fixed.
