Submitting this to sata, 'cos I don't know better.

Debian squeeze userspace, kernel 3.0.x up till 3.0.16. Rootfs / is ext4 on an encrypted LVM with noatime to speed it up. Disk in use is:

My Thinkpad T420 is suffering from terrible disk perfomance after a few days of uptime. I have no error messages in dmesg but everything grinds to a halt: Chromium browser takes tens of seconds to read fs cache, git fetch/pull takes tens of minutes, starting a new process or opening a file in vi may halt for a minute propably waiting for IO.

iotop does not show much disk IO going on when things grinds to a halt. dmesg does not show any problems. top shows that swap is not being used since there's 8 gigs of ram.

I tried to depict the issue with bonnie++. When the thing is dead slow after few days of uptime the results are:

$ /usr/sbin/bonnie++

I don't know much about the numbers but the seek latency of 26 seconds does seem like the problem I have.

After a reboot bonnie shows more decent latency number (for the others I really can't tell) and I can actually think of git fetching stable tree and doing a kernel compile:

I'd be happy to try different kernels with various debug options to nail down this problem. Any ideas?

Can you please try "dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/zero iflag=direct bs=1M count=100" when the system is in the slow state and post the output? Please also attach the output of dmesg. Thanks.

Will try the dd thing once this hits again.

Here's dmesg on 3.0.17 after boot:

Right now it seems like the situation is on again. At least trying to grep or git grep something in a kernel tree seems to take ages and whole system seems to slow down.

In addition to this, I noticed some weird file access patterns on my ext4 fs. Grepping for a string in a 160 Mb vmlinux.o took over half an hour. I had played around with ext4 parameters relatime,data=writeback,barrier=0 on this file system but gone back to plain noatime, so maybe there's something I've screwed up. After "git clean -d -x -f"ing (which took ages to complete) the kernel tree I can now grep around with enough speed.

iotop shows almost no disk access when things go to halt.

I've used e2fsprogs 1.41.12-4stable1 from Debian squeeze/stable. Maybe a full fsck on the ext4 fs would help?

Just in case I had messed up the ext4 options, I re-installed the root fs but the problems are still there. Very sluggish IO performance after few days of uptime.

Does the SMART error mean the disk is just crap?
Comment 7 Mikko Rapeli 2012-02-22 07:54:18 UTC
Right after poweroff and reboot the disk is back to normal again, for a few hours I hope:

Comment 8 Alan 2012-05-12 02:38:27 UTC
It could be

The kernel doesn't itself send SMART commands - try disabling palimpset, smartutils or whatever you distro uses. If that makes the difference then let the mantainers of the apps know that you've got another drive they may need to blacklist
