what kernel version are you using? please confirm the problem exists in the latest upstream kernel. have you tried boot parameter "noapic"?
kernel was 4.13.0+ - net-next tree from davem git but noapic will have other problems with cpu frequency i think and less performance - will turbo work with intel with noapic ?
noapic is not used to fix the issue, it just helps us to narrow down the problem
I hit apic panic after upgrading the kernel to 4.13. Currently it is 4.13.7 and has the same issue. I have to add noapic to boot it up but I got interrupt 7 and the box freezes after coming up some hours. It worked perfectly without the noapic option in 4.12.x and older. My box has AMD CPU and and uses nvidia grapics. I tried adding apic=debug but I did not see more on the console. Does it write anything into a file somewhere? What had changed in this area in 4.13? Can that be a configuration issue? Basically I carried the 4.12 configuration forward to 4.13. Regards.

uname -a Linux media 4.13.7 #1 SMP Sun Oct 15 21:51:26 EDT 2017 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Will downgrade back to 4.12.14 until issue is fixed in 4.13.
p_c_chan@hotmail.com I'm not sure if it is the same problem. But as this is a regression, please use git bisect to find out the offending commit.
Now back in 4.12.14 without noapic. That gives us more. # uname -a Linux media 4.12.14 #1 SMP Tue Oct 17 21:10:16 EDT 2017 x86_64 GNU/Linux syslog at where it failed in 4.13: Oct 17 21:29:51 media vmunix: ..TIMER: vector=0x30 apic1=0 pin1=0 apic2=-1 pin2=-1 Oct 17 21:29:51 media vmunix: ..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC Oct 17 21:29:51 media vmunix: ...trying to set up timer (IRQ0) through the 8259A ... p_c_chan@hotmail.com, as it might be another problem, please file a new bug report instead, and attach the dmesg output as attachments.
I got the same kernel panic on timer and io-apic with 4.13.x. Why do we think it is different?
There was no dmesg output when it hit the kernel panic. It's too early for logging to work. The dmesg was from 4.12.14 when it booted up OK.
It works without noapic in 4.12.14. It fails in 4.13 and 4.14-RCx.
(In reply to p_c_chan from comment #14) > I got the same kernel panic on timer and io-apic with 4.13.x. Why do we > think it is different? your processor is CPU0: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ while the original bug reporter has Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6132 CPU @ 2.60GHz So it may or may not be the same problem. To avoid confusing, it's better to track these two problems in separate threads, the information I asked for in this bug report, is useful for the original bug reporter' problem.
(In reply to p_c_chan from comment #15) > There was no dmesg output when it hit the kernel panic. It's too early for > logging to work. > > The dmesg was from 4.12.14 when it booted up OK. yes, I mean any dmesg output like in comment #11 should be attached as attachments.
The problem you met is clearly a regression according to your description, and IMO, the most efficient way to get the root cause of the problem is do git bisect. please run git bisect to find out the offending commit.
This probably is inside the big one: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/03ffbcdd7898c0b5299efeb9f18de927487ec1cf#diff-bfdbce36d815c6829b32b5eebc17923f How do we do git bisect?
Is there a way to generate a patch for that commit, so that I can try screwing 14.12.14?
Hi Pawel, How about the latest mainline rather than the net-next branch kernel? I have an impression that I saw similar panic previously but was fixed very quickly.
Currently im running 4.14.0-rc1 - ant it is working. So i can go only 4.14+ Or downgrade to 4.12.8 - where bug with DSTCACHE dont exist
(In reply to p_c_chan from comment #21) > Is there a way to generate a patch for that commit, so that I can try > screwing 14.12.14? Is it possible to add below code in check_timer() just before panic to collect some print? You may need to enable macro DEBUG and make them external. print_PIC(); print_local_APIC(0); It's interesting to know if it's masked some where in the path.
You meant in 4.13 or above? The panic happens so early that print isn't logged anywhere and we cannot scroll the screen back after it freezes. The only way to capture anything could be a video camera point at the console...
BTW, I had tried 4.14-RCx before. It hit the panic same way. With noapic, it boots up but it would say interrupt x disabled and freezes usually, within a few hours.
BTW, I have raised bug report 197769 for my AMD/Nvidia box.
We actually have a patch for 197769 last week. Please check if that also addresses this report.
