This problem was traced to a defective SATA drive. When being prepped by itself, it would eventually cause the kernel to reset the SATA bus, as I recall. Effectively, this drive was trying to read data on the drive, and taking a long time to do it. Likely it was trying to recover whatever it could from a bad block.. |
