Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur: 2.6.13.3 (I did not test other versions, but i noticed the bug since 2.6.16 kernel) Distribution: Frugalware Problem Description: acpi_cpufreq doesn't work anymore (the module can't be loaded) # modprobe acpi_cpufreq FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.17-fw3/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device I have been able to reproduce this problem since kernel 2.6.16 (and kernel 2.6.13 works fine) both self compiled kernel or from my distribution binaries I still have the problem in 2.6.17.4 kernel. I can provide more info on request. # cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 13 model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.80GHz stepping : 6 cpu MHz : 1794.775 cache size : 2048 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 2 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss tm pbe up est tm2 bogomips : 3590.20 t# cat /proc/modules arc4 2816 1 - Live 0xe0019000 ieee80211_crypt_wep 5632 1 - Live 0xe04eb000 acerhk 25852 0 - Live 0xe0075000 snd_intel8x0 31388 1 - Live 0xe04de000 snd_ac97_codec 83360 1 snd_intel8x0, Live 0xe04fa000 snd_ac97_bus 3072 1 snd_ac97_codec, Live 0xe0006000 8139too 25472 0 - Live 0xe04d6000 mii 6144 1 8139too, Live 0xe0050000 capability 5640 0 - Live 0xe004d000 commoncap 7680 1 capability, Live 0xe002c000 ipv6 229280 12 - Live 0xe051b000 freq_table 5280 0 - Live 0xe002f000 processor 26568 0 - Live 0xe003f000 ipw2200 95036 0 - Live 0xe005c000 ieee80211 30536 1 ipw2200, Live 0xe0036000 ieee80211_crypt 6656 2 ieee80211_crypt_wep,ieee80211, Live 0xe0029000 loop 15880 0 - Live 0xe000f000 lp 12552 0 - Live 0xe0014000 parport 34120 1 lp, Live 0xe # lspci -vvv 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV Processor to I/O Controller (rev 02) Subsystem: Wistron Corp. does speedstep-centrino.c works for you? Please add a printk in cpufreq_register_driver after if ((!ret) && !(cpufreq_driver->flags & CPUFREQ_STICKY)) { int i; ret = -ENODEV; to check if return from here.
Same problem here. acpi-cpufreq works on 2.6.15, but doesn't on 2.6.17.4 with the same error message. speedstep-centrino also refuses to load with "No such device". $ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 13 model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz stepping : 6 cpu MHz : 599.481 cache size : 2048 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 2 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss tm pbe est tm2 bogomips : 1199.64
Sorry for the late reply. I have tried with kernel 2.6.18-rc4 i still can reproduce the problem. i've added printk all around the function, but i don't see them. but i dont't know where i should look for them or if i need particular kernel options.
I can now use cpufreq correctly on linux 2.6.19-rc4 Not with acpi_cpufreq module, but with the speedstep module.
