I don't understand. Are you sure this is a bug with mainline kernel? Reading
over the comments in the thread you reference, it seems like only Mandrake had
troubles? Ubunut & Knoppix work ok with both disks? Can you boot into 2.6.10?
How aobut 2.6.11-rc5? Thanks, Nish

I'm not sure. I'm not a "power user". (Only a user as desktop)
I have the problem with Mandrake since the 10.1 (kernel 2.6.8.1)
But I tried the Suse 9.2 and it's the same problem. (Freeze at the start of the
installation)

I just try to install Debian with the Net-install of the day (04-03-2005) and it
freeze when loading the sata sil3112 module.
Mandrake since 10.0, Suse 9.2 and Debian testing have the same problem.
But Knoppix 3.7 doesn't have, and works perfectly.
Anyone has an idea?

Update on the Mandrake Bugzilla. It works with the 2.6.11 but as it is my first
compiled kernel, I'm not sure I really found the reason.

Comment 5 Skippy 2005-04-02 07:14:00 UTC
As said in bug 11688 from Mandrake Bugzilla it seems to be due to a bug from the
actual sata driver.
It works with the old sata driver, but the distributions (Mandrake, Suse,
Debian..) don't use it anymore because it is deprecated. And the new "libata"
doesn't seem to be completely OK with this chip. (SIL3112)
Comment 6 Skippy 2005-04-23 06:28:41 UTC
What can we do for this driver actually?
Is it possible to include the sil3112A chipset to the default Sata driver?

Maybe my experience can be usefull : I finally found a way to use my sata disk
with sil312 : enabling ACPI (Mandriva cooker kernel 2.6.12-10mdk) I'haven't got
the famous "disabling IRQ11" during boot , even if disk is not detected : I
needed to rmmod and modprobe sata_sil to be able to mount my partitions from
sata disk

This should have been fixed with new EH and custom sata_sil freeze/thaw/irq_handler. Nobody cared won't happen for sata_sil anymore.
