The rtl8187 module driver doesn't work properly on hight traffic. When foe example I am downloading torrents the card doesn't respond an the connection is lost. I have to unload and load the module again. I only happens with me when the torrents are on.

The fix for this problem was queued for inclusion in 2.6.28 two days ago. It should be incorporated within the next week, or so.

Hello, I seem to be having a similar problem with an RTL-8187SE. Like the OP the connection stalls without warning and comes back up only if I cycle the card initialization scripts (which provide to dmesg the message "r8180: Card successfully reset"). Currently I'm using 2.6.30.4 because I haven't seen relevant commits on newer kernels for this hardware, which is ~1yr old. I'd be happy to provide more information if that can help matters. The above fix looks very simple but I'm not sure how to find the offending section of code in the absence of USB-specific functions.
The driver for the RTL8187SE is the vendor driver, which is why it is in STAGING. In general, those drivers are take-it-or-leave-it as the code is a real mess. They are provided because there is no better alternative. Whatever warts they have are not likely to be fixed unless someone with the hardware actually makes an effort. Furthermore, such an individual is more likely to put any such effort into converting the driver to work with the current MAC-layer software, as opposed to the vendor's version. There are lots of things that cause a wireless device to lose the connection and require resetting. The fix for the USB devices will not have any effect on your PCI device. With the former, you have a shared communication line and changes to the registers are done via a control message over that shared bus. With PCI, the device registers are mapped into the CPUs address space and the changes are done directly. Sorry that I cannot offer you any real fixes.
Thanks, Larry, for the detailed response. How difficult would it be to convert the driver to the "current MAC-layer software"? Too difficult for a kernel hacking newbie? I have the hardware, maybe _I_ should be making an effort to improve support. If there are any resources you'd recommend to me as I consider getting involved I'd much appreciate it. Truthfully it seems a little over my head, but I guess that's a pretty good way to improve.
It will be quite difficult. I had a go at it. After nearly a week of full-tiime effort, I still didn't have anything that would compile. You are welcome to my patches, but I'm not sure that you would want to start with something this difficult.
