Description Colin King 2008-04-08 04:50:22 UTC
Latest working kernel version: Unknown
Earliest failing kernel version: Uknown
Distribution: Ubuntu 8.04 beta with stock 2.6.24.4 kernel
Hardware Environment: Lenovo 3000N200 (and various laptops)
Software Environment:
Problem Description: Continuous raw reads from CD-ROM fails on power suspend/resume.

Steps to reproduce:

dd if=/dev/scd0 of=/dev/null

and then:

echo mem > /sys/power/state

on resume, dd fails with the error:

dd: reading `/dev/scd0': Input/output error
27360+0 records in
27360+0 records out

and dmesg reports:

Comment 1 Tejun Heo 2008-04-09 18:18:36 UTC
Can you please post full result of 'dmesg'? There should be leading libata messages before those buffer IO failure messages. Also, please post the result of "lspci -nn". What do you mean by "and various laptops"? Is this problem common to other laptops w/ the same drive?
Comment 2 Colin King 2008-04-10 05:07:08 UTC
Hi, here is the dmesg log from when the suspend occurs to when the resume completes.

The drive of my Lenovo 3000N200 is:

MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850 z RB32 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

This problem seems to occur with a Toshiba Tecra A7 with the following drive:

MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S 1.20 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

so I am not sure if it there needs some quirk horkage needed for this particular range of MATSHITA drives, or if it's a problem with the underlying sata core.

Comment 3 Tejun Heo 2008-04-10 22:56:24 UTC
1. Please attach full kernel log including boot messages, suspend, resume and following failure.

2. Can you please give a shot at 2.6.25-rc8. We now support hardreset for ich8/9 piix's and libata can kick the device harder in the ass if it doesn't wake up.

Thanks.
Comment 4 Colin King 2008-04-18 08:04:50 UTC
Hi,

Tried to test against 2.6.25-rc8 but the resume does not work now, so this is becoming difficult to test. Will try 2.6.25 when I have some free time.
