i meant to say none. i meant that it is occurring on both this kernel, and 2.6.20-12, which is the feisty kernel. this kernel is 2.6.20-16-generic on gutsy gibbon. no extra drivers or anything. i don't remember it on dapper drake or on etchy etch, but would happily reinstall those and check for it. i didn't notice it in slackware 11.2 either. i'm really wanting to get this fixed. i'll do anything i can to help. i've already got all my data backed up, so nothing would be a problem for me to do. ssh access is available too.

i'll put a cd into the drive and leave it and watch for it to freeze, and keep an eye on dmesg. if it keeps freezing, i doubt it would take longer than 2 days for it to start doing it. sometimes are better than others. i'll let you know. i can point out which lines in dmesg it is freezing in, for each instance, if you want. and i'd be happy to help any way i can. i think it still freezes with a cd in there. i tried to stop it a few months ago after reading about hald doing that after checking all the time. i even tried configuring hald too. this has been bugging me for a while. :) with kernel 2.16.15, my hard drive was still labeled /dev/hda1 instead of /dev/sda1 and i never noticed these problems. (i don't think they were there) but i will try the cd in the drive again, its worth checking to be correct. :)
It did it again. I have a cd in the cdrom, and its been in there all this time. I was watching a video with gmplayer, and noticed it. Its the first time its happened since i reported last time. I applied the revised patch, and did not see the error again. I tested it on 2.6.33.6 on ubuntu. I've never built an ubuntu kernel before, and I must say that it was the most painful process I have ever undertaken. It certainly does not seem like a straightforward process. I'm sure I will need to learn more and try the process again, to see if it fixed the problem. I tested without a cd in the drive, and let it sit, as well as putting it under a load with disk activity. I've tested for maybe 3 hours, and no freeze. I'll test again for longer amounts of time, and again after I figure out how to rebuild the ubuntu kernel correctly. If you have any pointers here, or a list of commands to carry out the task, I would appreciate it. Mostly, I wanted to let you know I got the patch, and am testing it, and also let you know I was having difficulty with the ubuntu kernel building and appeal for any help, if it is convenient for you. I will continue to test it, and will let you know if the problem comes up again. Thanks a million for addressing my bug. It was a very annoying one. Thanks too, for the work you put into the kernel. Building a distro kernel is always painful. I work for a distro but still hate all the distro kernels including the one I work on. :-) For debugging purpose, using the vanilla kernel suffices and is easier for both testers and developers. Just build in every driver you need. During boot, the system will complain a bit about not being able to find certain module or somesuch but all the distros will work just fine with the vanilla kernel. These days, distros keep their kernels very close to vanilla ones. The heretic days of heavily patched vendor 2.4 kernels is fortunately over. Another tip to make sure that the patch is in the kernel is to add a short printk where the code is changed so that you can be sure that the patched code is actually running. It's easy to get the wrong kernel up. Heck, I build and test kernels daily but I still make such mistakes often enough. Please report further testing result. Thanks.

thank you too for addressing it. i am sorry to admit that i never did test any of the patches. i did however apply them to the kernel source and compiled, and attempted to test them. i never did learn how to build the ramdisk, or initrd.gz. i have given the issue thought and looked to other solutions, and would like to share this with you. i still have the issue with kernel 2.6.22-14, the generic gutsy kernel. it doesn't seem to be caused by the kernel, but that the kernel allows it to happen is disappointing. if i keep a cd mounted, it happens much less. sometimes not at all in a span of two weeks. if i remember correctly, it seemed to be caused by avahi or avahi-dameon, constanting polling the device looking for something to mount. keeping a disk mounted in the dvdrw helped. i do this now, all the time. ironically, and surprisingly, it has occurred twice while typing this email. which both surprises and amuses me. as i have been able to suppress it, i am able to operate the computer again, and the issue does not seem as urgent as before. i haven't had time to figure out how to help solve the issue. i do care, and appreciate the effort afforded to me by yourself and the community. since filing, i have often spent idle time away from keyboards considering the issue, and have attempted to delve into understanding how the ubuntu kernel is set up on several occasions, to no avail. i am satisfied. thank you again, and i hope you do not feel that your efforts were wasted. i expect to pick up your contribution again, when i have the time it takes, unless the issue is solved. best wishes to you. that would be great. i feel a list of commands completing the task would be most helpful, along with how to change the .config, if needed. attached is /boot/config-2.6.22-14-generic i would be happy with any recent kernel release. also, if you are familiar with the process, a command to build a .deb package for installation with dpkg would be appreciated, although not completely neccessary. i named avahi-dameon earlier as the culprit, but was wrong. it was actually hald i meant to name. from ps ax, hald-addon-storage: polling /dev/scd0 (every 2 sec) a problem i had while trying to test was that my wireless driver would be missing from the kernel, i believe because of its proprietary nature. this kept me offline and unable to test for long durations. i believe i could get the proprietary drivers into the kernel quickly and easily if that would make this easier on you. :) let me know if you need a shell, or anything else. i'd be happy to help. i have all the build tools and libs. thanks again !
