Distribution: Debian GNU/Linux Unstable Hardware Environment: Notebook Acer TM 800LCI, Ethernet controller Broadcom 4401 100 Base-T Software Environment: module-init-tools 0.9.13-pre-1 Problem Description: This ethernet controller, which is handled by b44.ko network card driver module in 2.5 and 2.6 kernels, can't send ethernet packets. The driver sees the link as down whereas the 2.4 driver, not available in the 2.4 official tree (bcm4400.o module), functions correctly. Steps to reproduce: modprobe b44 configure the corresponding ethernet device (either by /etc/init.d/networking start or manually with ifconfig) module reports link as being down
