Problem Description:
I've connected a mouse and a Canon MP600 (multifunction device) on a mini hub
which is then connected to the mainboard (USB2.0). Nothing is working on the
mini hub because of the initialization problem.

syslog output is:

Problem Description:
I've connected a mouse and a Canon MP600 (multifunction device) on a mini hub
which is then connected to the mainboard (USB2.0). Nothing is working on the
mini hub because of the initialization problem.

You said that this problem doesn't occur in 2.6.18. Can you provide a dmesg log
showing what does happen with that kernel? It would help if you turn on
CONFIG_USB_DEBUG before building the USB drivers.

Also, for 2.6.20, please get a usbmon log. Instructions are in the kernel
source file Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt.

Comment 5 Alan Stern 2007-02-14 09:26:06 UTC
The usbmon log shows clearly what the problem is. You have the mini-hub plugged
into port 4 of the motherboard's EHCI controller, and you have some other hub
plugged into port 3 of the EHCI controller. That other hub doesn't have any
devices attached to it, so the kernel suspends it.

Then the problem starts. When port 3 is suspended, port 4 stops working also.
This must be a hardware bug in your motherboard's EHCI controller. You could
try working around it by moving the other hub to a different port or removing it
entirely. Alternatively, you could prevent the other hub from being suspended
by doing:

    echo disabled >/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-2/power/wakeup

or by turning off CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND in your kernel's configuration.

Many others have experienced this bug, see this entry:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/88746

This bug was certainly not present in the previous Ubuntu release kernel (2.6.18 ???) only in the current (2.6.20)

Your comment is a little mystifying. The bug isn't present in any kernel, Ubuntu's or anyone else's. The bug is in the EHCI hardware on Martin's computer.

Sorry, please disregard my comment!

I accidentally thought this but is the same as the Launchpad Linux kernel ehci_hcd bug (the URL I linked.) Oops.

It sounds like the problem was resolved, probably time to close the bug.
Thanks,
