Hi, I've got a thinkpad X230 with debian jessie (testing) installed, the radio is N capable but my system is not able to connect using N. The APs are N capable and it works with N with intel 5300ABGN network card, not with Advenced-N 6205. Here I paste some info about the system and the hardware. root@carboni:/home/laura# lspci [...] 03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34) root@carboni:/home/laura# lshw -C Network [...] *-network description: Wireless interface product: Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0 logical name: wlan0 version: 34 serial: a4:4e:31:cd:ae:d0 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwlwifi driverversion=3.14-1-amd64 firmware=17.168.5.3 build 42301 ip=192.168.1.149 latency=0 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11abgn resources: irq:44 memory:f1c00000-f1c01fff [...] root@carboni:/home/laura# uname -a Linux carboni 3.14-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.14.4-1 (2014-05-13) x86_64 GNU/Linux root@carboni:/home/laura# cat /etc/debian_version jessie/sid root@carboni:/home/laura# dpkg -l |grep firmware-iwl ii firmware-iwlwifi 0.42 all Binary firmware for Intel Wireless cards root@carboni:/home/laura# ls -l /lib/firmware |grep iwl -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 337520 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-1000-5.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 337572 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-100-5.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 689680 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-105-6.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 701228 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-135-6.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 695876 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-2000-6.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 707392 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-2030-6.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 670484 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-3160-7.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 667284 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-3160-8.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 150100 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-3945-2.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 187972 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 353240 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 340696 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 337400 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-5150-2.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 454608 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-6000-4.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 444128 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-6000g2a-5.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 679436 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 463692 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-6050-4.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 469780 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-6050-5.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 683236 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-7260-7.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 679780 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-7260-8.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 690452 jun 4 00:32 iwlwifi-7265-8.ucode Tried to install ucode from iwlwifi-6000g2a-ucode-18.168.6.1 and also did not put wireless to N, and default kernel config is to load new ucode root@carboni:/boot# cat config-3.14-1-amd64 |grep CONFIG_FW_LOADER CONFIG_FW_LOADER=y CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER=y The output of dmesg on loading 6000g2a and then rebooting and getting it work with 6000g2b root@carboni:/boot# dmesg |grep iwl [ 2.212838] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: can't disable ASPM; OS doesn't have ASPM control [ 2.213123] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: irq 44 for MSI/MSI-X [ 2.218177] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: firmware: failed to load iwlwifi-6000g2a-6.ucode (-2) [ 2.218237] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Direct firmware load failed with error -2 [ 2.218239] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Falling back to user helper [ 2.357039] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: firmware: direct-loading firmware iwlwifi-6000g2a-5.ucode [ 2.357161] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: loaded firmware version 17.168.5.3 build 42301 op_mode iwldvm [ 2.383163] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEBUG disabled [ 2.383164] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEBUGFS disabled [ 2.383165] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: CONFIG_IWLWIFI_DEVICE_TRACING disabled [ 2.383166] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205 AGN, REV=0xB0 [ 2.384023] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: L1 Enabled; Disabling L0S [ 2.418121] ieee80211 phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'iwl-agn-rs' [ 7.309099] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: L1 Enabled; Disabling L0S [ 7.315680] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Radio type=0x1-0x2-0x0 [ 7.586650] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: L1 Enabled; Disabling L0S [ 7.593132] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Radio type=0x1-0x2-0x0 root@carboni:/home/laura# iwconfig [...] wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"nusepas" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 06:27:22:51:DA:28 Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality=61/70 Signal level=-49 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:466 Missed beacon:0 Intel website drivers tells you to go to firmware-iwlwifi project: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/iwlwifi If I could provide more info or do tests, just ask for it, I'll be glad to be helpful... Your description is very vague. What do you mean by "my system is not able to connect using N"? How do you check that? Based on the bit rate? 54Mb/s?
Yes, one is the bit rate of connection (showed in iwconfig) and the other is the speed, I'm not able to move than 20-30Mbit transfer, in N I could move about 70-90Mbit transfer or more. Yesterday I tried to recompile kernel 3.15.1 but I was not able to boot with the last version kernel. I offer me to do more tests. All the info I could collect is in the first message. I'm sorry to not be able to show buggy stuff, I only see that N speed is not working on this card, with the version of driver and kernel I have.
please paste the output of iw list

Mmmmm some clue?
frankly no. I don't have much time for this right now.
please try 11n_disable=8
where?
as a module parameter to iwlwifi
ok, try later, now I'm working
now it seems is connecting at 65-72Mbps, right now I'm not at home and I'm not really close to the AP. So when returning at home try to see if it connects to 150 and 300Mbps. For documenting it: I edited /etc/modules and added a new line with: iwlwifi 11n_disable=8 At the moment, thanks you much. What really do defining that?
