Created attachment 140591 [details] dumpe2fs info for ext4 backup destinaton Background: - I use lvm snapshots on ext4 for backup. I use dump to backup the snapshots. The backup goes to an external hard drive over usb 3.0. The external hard drive has 1 partition formatted with ext4. - This bug report is based upon a conversation on the ext4 mailing list. I am filing it, because I now have more information and examples. Summary: - I've noticed the performance of dump to my ext4 backup degrades linearly as the disk fills. Details: Exhibit A (below) is what I am seeing. It seemed to do well up until 20%, but then performance drops. Between 31% and 33%, I reran dumpe2fs in case this was some sort of cache poison issue. As you can see, it didn't improve performance at the time. Exhibit B is the same thing, only I reformatted the destination for XFS. XFS is able to complete the backup in 4:24:16, whereas EXT4 takes 6:27:29. XFS does not dip below 115 mB/s until 64.22%. Even then, the loss in minimal so that performance never drops below 108 mB/s (6% loss). EXT4, on the other hand, drops below 115 mB/s at 21.72%. Performance continues to drop precipitously until reaching 74 mB/s (35% loss). Exhibit C, run at Theo's suggestion, is EXT4 but with the destination file broken into smaller, multiple files. The purprose was to determine if the performance was related to the increase in the file size or the decrease in volume free space. As you can see, performance did not reset with a new file. It continued to degrade right were the previous file left off. I am using journal=writeback. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Joseph D. Wagner (FYI, lvbackup is a script I wrote to 1) create to lvm snapshot, 2) run dump, and 3) drop the snapshot.) #### #### Exhibit A #### #### EXT4 - all in one file #### # su -c 'cd /root; dumpe2fs /dev/mapper/backup > /dev/null; nice ionice -c3 /usr/local/bin/lvbackup /dev/data/home /mnt/backup' Password: dumpe2fs 1.42.8 (20-Jun-2013) DUMP: mount: bad UUID DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Mon Jun 16 20:08:57 2014 DUMP: Dumping /dev/data/backup-data-home (an unlisted file system) to /mnt/backup/backup-data-home-20140616.200856-0.img DUMP: Label: none DUMP: Writing 64 Kilobyte records DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files] DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories] DUMP: estimated 1722505007 blocks. I changed the script to run "perf record" on the dump command. I turned tracing on for all jbd2 and ext4 events. (I had to stop it about half way through, because the perf.data file was getting too big.) All non-zero results are below. Are some of these events supposed to be balanced? For example, there were 8 ext4:ext4_es_shrink_enter, but 0 ext4:ext4_es_shrink_exit. I'm wondering if some of this code is being called recursively without proper unwinding. It could explain the recursive loss in performance. 499M ext4:ext4_journal_start: 356 chunks LOST! 252M jbd2:jbd2_handle_stats: 4 chunks LOST! 252M jbd2:jbd2_handle_start: 1 chunks LOST! 252M ext4:ext4_mark_inode_dirty: 3 chunks LOST! 246M ext4:ext4_ext_show_extent: 1 chunks LOST! 246M ext4:ext4_ext_map_blocks_exit: 1 chunks LOST! 246M ext4:ext4_ext_map_blocks_enter: 26 chunks LOST! 246M ext4:ext4_es_lookup_extent_exit 246M ext4:ext4_es_lookup_extent_enter: 1 chunks LOST! 246M ext4:ext4_es_insert_extent 246M ext4:ext4_da_write_end: 6 chunks LOST! 246M ext4:ext4_da_write_begin: 441 chunks LOST! 246M ext4:ext4_da_reserve_space 150 ext4:ext4_drop_inode 77 ext4:ext4_releasepage 17 ext4:ext4_es_cache_extent 8 ext4:ext4_sync_fs 8 ext4:ext4_es_shrink_enter 5 ext4:ext4_es_find_delayed_extent_range_exit 5 ext4:ext4_es_find_delayed_extent_range_enter 3 ext4:ext4_request_inode 3 ext4:ext4_allocate_inode 2 ext4:ext4_ext_load_extent
To try to isolate the cause, I reformatted for EXT4 without a journal. It took 4:57:08, which is 1:30:21 faster than journal=writeback. The performance is also in line with XFS -- solid performance until about 60%, then a slow loss. I think it's reasonable to conclude that the problem is either 1) in the journal, or 2) exasperated by the journal. Full details below. Joseph D. Another piece to this puzzle. I added a journal but mounted with nodelalloc. Performance was about 42 mB/s (36%) worse than without a journal. Does delayed allocation work without a journal? Delayed allocation certainly works with or without the journal. But disabling delayed allocation will _significantly_ impact performance. There's certainly no surprise there. Delalloc is one of the reasons why ext4 is significantly more performant than ext3, and the mode that we use in Google is ext4 with delalloc in no journal mode. In answer to your other questions, no the es_shrink_enter and es_shrink_exit calls are not balanced. In particular, the ext4_es_shrink_enter tracepoint gets called from two different functions (which is a bad thing; recent shrinker infrastructure changes added a s_es_shrinker_.count_objects() callback, and the person converted the ext4 shirnker over to the new setup duplicated the tracepoint instead of creating a new one. Also, in ext4_es_scan(), if nr_to_scan is zero, we don't end up calling the ext4_es_shrinker_exit tracepoint. Some other things to try. (1) Try collecting copies of /proc/meminfo and /proc/slabinfo every 10% of the dump process or so. That might be useful. (2) Try reformatting with a much larger journal, and see if that makes a difference. I doubt it will, but it's worth a try. (3) Either using /sys/kernel/debug, or the ftrace command (don't use perf; since we need the data associated with the tracepoints, not just the count), enable the jbd2_checkpoint and jbd2_run_stats and collect the tracepoint data during the run.
I formatted with these options. The performance difference has been profound. # mke2fs \ -E lazy_itable_init=0,lazy_journal_init=0 \ -J size=1024 -L backup -m 1 -t ext4 -v /dev/mapper/backup I will update with the details when it completes.

*Very* interesting. If increasing the journal helped significantly, I'd really like to get the traces from enabling jbd2_checkpoint and jbd2_run_stats, with both with the original and new journal size. (Note, you'll need to use "trace-cmd report" to get the actual traces, and then delete the trace.dat file between runs. The traces will be quite voluminous, but they should compress well.) To explain what you'll see: jbd2/sda3-8-331 [000] ...2 35527.318772: jbd2_run_stats: dev 8,3 tid 14512411 wait 0 request_delay 0 running 5290 locked 0 flushing 0 logging 0 handle_count 33 blocks 7 blocks_logged 8 This means that we spent a bit over five seconds letting the transaction run, and in that transaction contained 33 handles ("micro transactions") which covered 7 blocks, and it used 8 blocks of space in the journal. jbd2/sda3-8-331 [000] ...2 35534.133232: jbd2_run_stats: dev 8,3 tid 14512413 wait 0 request_delay 0 running 440 locked 0 flushing 0 logging 10 handle_count 27 blocks 8 blocks_logged 9 This is an example of a transaction that only ran for less than half a second (440 jiffies); since it ran for less than the default five seconds, we can surmise that there was an explicit fsync() that triggered the transaction. If the number of blocks logged was very high, it's possible it was triggered by running out of room in the journal, but in that case, you'd see a lot of jbd2_checkpoint tracepoint data as well. So now that we know that the journal size is making a difference, this will allow us to figure out *why* the journal size is making a difference.
This is entirely unexpected. Performance wasn't that bad. The only thing I did differently was using this option in mke2fs: "-E lazy_itable_init=0,lazy_journal_init=0" Could the lazy initialization be tripping it up? That doesn't make much sense, because I had been having this problem for some time before doing all these formatting experiments. I will attach ftrace and memstats shortly. Joseph D. What device (in major, minor number) were you writing to? It looks like the active devices were 253,1 and 253,3 and 253,5 And did you have the same lazyinit settings for the 1gb and 256mb journal? If you did enable the jbd2_checkpoint, I don't see any evidence that we ever needed to run a checkpoint. And the number of blocks used for each transaction is quite small, so it looks like the journal size shouldn't be making a difference. It's possible the lazy initialization could be stealing enough bandwidth that it would be making a difference. I'm surprised that it would cause a gradual decrease over time, though. The design was that it would steal a roughly constant percentage of disk time to initialize the inode tables. If you are immediately unmounting the file system once you are done with the backups, it could be that the lazy initialization is never finishing, but we do mark each block group as its inode table gets initialized, so the next time you remount it, it should pick up where it left off, until the inode tables are fully initialized. If you tell mke2fs to disable the lazy init feature, then the mke2fs takes longer, but it does initialize all of the inode table all at once.
Assuming these don't change across reboots: 253, 1 -> /dev/dm-1 -> system-os 253, 3 -> /dev/dm-3 -> backup (destination) 253, 5 -> /dev/dm-5 -> data-home (source) I used the same options for formatting. Here are the exact commands: $ mke2fs -E lazy_itable_init=0,lazy_journal_init=0 -J size=1024 -L backup -m 1 -t ext4 -v /dev/mapper/backup $ mke2fs -E lazy_itable_init=0,lazy_journal_init=0 -J size=256 -L backup -m 1 -t ext4 -v /dev/mapper/backup Here is the exact command for the ftrace and dump: $ trace-cmd record -o /root/ftrace/trace.dat \ -e jbd2:jbd2_checkpoint \ -e jbd2:jbd2_run_stats \ dump -${DUMPLEVEL} -a -b 64 -u -A "${TARGET_TOC}" -f "${TARGET_IMG}" -Q "${TARGET_QFA}" "${SNAPSHOT_PATH}" Often (but not always), I would set the system to shutdown immediately after backup. However, it was mounted automatically by /etc/fstab on each boot, and it was left mounted in the background. Prior to submitting these bug report, I had been running without reformatting for a number of months. I just finally got sick of it when I submitted my report. What do you think should be the next step? Reformat with those options, and rerun with a trace?
*Correction* Reformat with default options, and rerun with a trace?
