I can see on the console that second CPU is down and some messages saying that USB ports are also stopped. Then screen becomes black (off) but CPU fan is working and power LED is green (should blink). I can't connect to the computer from network and SysRq keys don't work. I try to suspend from runlevel 1 or 2 witch no modules loaded. Steps to reproduce: Try suspend to RAM. I compiled 2.6.20-rc3-git8. Nothing changed.
I installed 2.6.20-rc4, the problem still exists. I noticed that pm_trace works now. I can this in dmesg: ACPI: (supports S0 S3 S4 S5) Magic number: 7:0:150 hash matches device ttyp4

The exact same thing happens to me with my Toshiba Tecra M3. Fortunately, I have some more information: - The last kernel where this didn't occur is 2.6.15.7. - It started occuring beginning with 2.6.16-rc1. - Using 'git bisect', I found the "guilty commit" to be: 9b847548663ef1039dd49f0eb4463d001e596bc3 - [PATCH] Suspend support for libata . I am using the "Intel piix" driver for SATA support. I upgraded BIOS to 3.2 (from 1.7). Nothing changed... System still hangs if I try suspend to ram.
About SATA settings in my BIOS: There is almost no settings :( It is only possibility to set Primary and secondary IDE addres/IRQ. Primary is 1F0H/IRQ14, secondary 170H/IRQ15
I compiled 2.6.20-git-12. Nothing changed.

I am also an user of a Toshiba Tecra M5-384 with the same features as Maciek's one, and I have the same problem. Looking for clues on Google about this problem, I've just found the next Ubuntu bug report about a different Toshiba model: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/90771 and I have discovered that it is the same problem! My laptop suspended to RAM approximately after 3 minutes, and it seemed the CPU was doing something in the meanwhile, because fans went to full speed after some seconds. My distro is Gentoo x86. I made the test with 2.6.21-rc6-git7 vanilla kernel twice, with success. Neither wireless (ipw3945) nor graphics driver (nvidia proprietary driver) were compiled for this kernel, and although VESA driver was compiled, kernel was booted in text mode using next grub line: kernel /boot/git/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda3 resume2=/dev/sda2 libata.fua=1 psmouse.rate=40 My kernel config, in my next attachment.
Created attachment 11145 [details] Kernel config file This kernel config file has all the needed drivers for the laptop, but the proprietary ones. Although the kernel has many debug options checked (I had the hope of getting some valuable debug info) about SCSI, power management and ACPI, no one of them gave me a clue. The suspension was done using hibernate script, forcing it to remove all the modules before suspension.
I have also tested with my daily work kernel (2.6.19-suspend2-r1, which has both Gentoo and suspend2 patches), which has more or less the same configuration as the one in my previous submission. In this case, it took twice (around 6 minutes) to suspend to RAM. Both nvidia and ipw3945 drivers were loaded in this case, and no module was neither unloaded nor forced to unload. So, I guess the problem is related to SATA suspension or whatever is suspended after SATA.
I think there should be some BIOS settings about SATA mode. Try to config them as "Enhanced AHCI". Then recompile the kernel with CONFIG_SATA_AHCI=y. Just a suggestion. Reverse the BIOS setting changes if the kernel fail to boot then. :)
The BIOS of this laptop does not have such option, so I'm tied :-( And it seems Toshiba is not going to provide it, because neither old (1.70) nor new (3.10) BIOS has it.
Errata: Last BIOS version for Toshiba Tecra M5-384 is 3.20, not 3.10. I mistyped it, sorry.
As #8 says, the problem is on the generic suspend code, and I found the source of the problem. Although I'm not a kernel hacker, I have C and hardware programming knowledge. I have been narrowing the problem, following the codepath. At last, the problem is on the generic suspend code, at function ata_pci_device_do_suspend (file drivers/ata/libata-core.c). It seems this hardware does not like entering on PCI_D3hot state (at least as it is done by the generic code), because once I disabled that call inside the function body my laptop suspended to RAM (and resumed) with no apparent disk problem. Now it is the time of the hardware gurus, because the SATA controller is advertised on the PCI bus as D3hot capable.
New BIOS for Toshiba Tecra M5-384, 3.30, does not solve the problem. Tested with latest release kernel 2.6.21.
I installed kernel 2.6.22-rc1. My system still need 5 minutes to suspend to ram.
Please post the result of 'dmidecode' and 'lspci -nnv'.

Unfortunately, this second patch didn't work, as it worked the same as without any patch.
About the first patch, I found a side effect of suspending to RAM and resuming on this laptop using it: when you reboot the laptop after a suspend/resume cycle and Linux is booting again, the wired network driver (e1000) complains about EEPROM checksum. The laptop must to a power-cycle (poweroff and then start) to get the driver working again. As the second patch, this third one did not work. About EEPROM checksum problem, I'm not sure. I guess that a hidden bug in e1000 driver suspend code has just arisen, just when suspend to RAM worked with the patch. Now I'm going to test suspend-to-disk using 'echo disk > /sys/power/state' in the vanilla kernel 2.6.22-rc5-git2. PS: With older kernels (2.6.19 AFAICR) patched with gentoo patchset plus suspend2 I got the laptop suspending to disk and resuming in my daily work, and then I had no problem with e1000.
Plain suspend-to-disk (using echo disk > /sys/power/state) suspended, but it hanged on resume, just after reading the contents from the suspend partition and clearing the screen (only a blinking underscore cursor was there). After a few seconds, the system got hot because fans twisted at full speed. I left the system in that state at least 6 minutes, and nothing happened. Kernel was 2.6.22_rc5-git2 with the first patch.
That's weird the third and first patches are identical in the suspend path. It only fixes a bug during resume. Can you please verify the test again? Thanks.

I have tested the kernel 2.6.22-rc5-git2 with the patchset and comment #35 patch, I suspended-to-disk, and it hanged on resume as before. But at least this time the screen was not cleared once the contents from the suspend partition were read. I tested skip-pci-disable-and-suspend-on-tecra-m5-and-satellite-U205-take5.patch with kernel 2.6.22-rc6-git3 - suspend to ram works fine. Suspend to disk still don't work. System suspends normally but hangs during wake-up. I think, It looks different then with earlier patch. I can see; pnp: Failed to activate device 00:06 pnp: Failed to activate device00:07 pnp: Device 00:0c activated. cursor blinks near this - I think that next messages are left from suspending the system. I have also an off-topic question to José: Are you able to suspend form X environment (nvidia drivers).
I forgotten to write that after failed resume, system FAN start to work fast. Looks like processor is doing something. Magic SysReq keys don't work.
I tested suspend to disk again. It suspends normal. During resume this time system hangs with message: Suspending Consoles. It looks different than I wrote in my previous message. The fan is still working fast and SysReq keys don't work. I waited more than 30 minutes - nothing changed.
I tested take5 in my U205 laptop. It works for both s2ram and s2disk. The s2disk hangs in resume if I use a splash screen. Maciek, are you using a slash screen? Without the splash screen, resume works fine. Note that this problem is probably not related with the suspend patch as I have the same problem without the patch since 2.6.22-rc5. I did not compile the newer 2.6.22-rc7 without the patch though, I will try now and post results.
I have just confirmed, in a U205 laptop: s2disk + splash freezes on reboot in both vanilla rc7 and rc7 + take5 patch. s2disk without splash works on both cases. It seems that the problems with s2disk + splash are not related to the take5 splash.
Sorry for the delay (I have been traveling these days). I can confirm that this patch is working for suspend-to-RAM with my laptop (Toshiba Tecra M5) in 2.6.22-rc7. Suspend-To-Disk (echo disk > /sys/power/state) did not work for me. Suspension itself worked, but once it resumes, my screen shows vertical bars with a blinking cursor on the middle-left (more or less).
I have just got working suspend-to-disk! I just set up the VESA framebuffer in the kernel, and I added 'vga=0x31B video=vesafb:mtrr:3,ywrap' kernel boot parameters to grub in order to get a graphical boot. So, I guess that suspend-to-disk is hanging on resume in plain vga mode.
Sorry for the false alarm. I got suspend-to-disk only once, and my additional attempts have failed.
The U200 model is also effect by this bug. All subsystem IDs are 1179:0001 where 0001 doesn't seem to mean much. They really didn't want to identify themselves. It seems "T" and "P" combination is our best shot. Anyone else out there with Tecra M3? I wanna know how the Serial Number and UUID change on different machines. Thanks.
I noticed an problem with wired network after suspend to ram. It looks a little like problem described by Jose some time ago. System don't see eth0 after resume. I can't find anything interesting about thhhis event in logs. I had this problem once and can't reproduce it. I write it here because Hose reported sth. about network before. After reboot everything is OK. When this problem occurred, I suspended and resumed computer without ethernet cable connected.

My network adapter (lspci): Intel Corporation 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller working on standard kernel e1000 driver. After some time I noticed this problem few times. I think that it appear when I use wireless network (eth0 is down and cable unplugged) then I suspend. When I resume and I connect ethernet. System don't see eth0 device. I don't see anything special in dmesg, just there is no eth0. Lspci see Ethernet controller. Suspending and resuming with ethernet cable plugged don't help. I have to restart the computer. Plugging cable before or after resume don't change anything.

Hmmm.. This one and 8855 is different. I think it's better not to mix the two. This one is caused by ACPI S3 trying to access ATA devices. 8855 is caused by ACPI S5 trying to spin down disks already spun down by OS.
Ahh, ok. One still could get an overview by the attachements list, if these are really all affected... Still if ACPI should be the grief, I'd really like to see acpidump outputs (with similar description as done to the dmidecode attachements, so that we can map which dmi decode output maps to which acpidump) to compare and dig a bit ...
Well... I'm quite lost. I do not know if I have to attach this here or to the other bug, really. I have just downloaded git and cloned the kernel, so I'll try to suspend to a recent kernel tomorrow... but in the case it is useful, I will attach acpidump (dmidecode is attached at comment #85). This appears to happen with the Tecra M7 as well, same phenomena, same sata driver. I'm going to try your patch, edited to put Tecra M7 in there. I had to update the bios and then do a bunch of DSDT hacking just to get it to suspend in the first place, but after I fixed that problem, started getting the long wait to suspend. It otherwise works. I'll let you know if the patch works. If not, what data would you need to look at it?
So this definitely fixes my suspend time as well. Takes about 3 seconds to suspend after patching, all I did was change the Tecra M5 parts in the patch to Tecra M7 and patched, not really sure if that did anything or not, but it's working now. It does take longer to unsuspend, like 15 seconds, but this is definitely preferable to to waiting 10 minutes for it to suspend in the first place. If you need any more data, let me know!

It looks like the take6 patch was committed to 2.6.23. Take6 does not solve the problem for the U200. The change I noted in comment 59 is still needed.

I'm a Tecra M3 owner and still experience slow ~5 min suspends with the Ubuntu 7.10 Beta LiveCD kernel (2.6.22 which IIRC has had this patch applied). I tried attaching my DMIDECODE output from my Ubuntu bug report but only the URL showed up, for what it's worth: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9579380/dmidecode.log is the result. TECRA M3 is already in 2.6.23-rc8. Please try it out or 2.6.23 when it comes out. 2.6.22[.X] doesn't have any of the above changes, so it won't work. Thanks.
Angus enlightened me via private email that the Tecra M3 has different DMI table where it has proper vendor and product name entries, which I missed even after seeing comment 110 which contains a patch. Sorry about the negligence. :-) Patch submitted. Thanks.
I'm still having this problem under ubuntu gutsy on a Toshiba Satellite U205-S5067. I've tested with the ubuntu gutsy 2.6.22 kernel, the patched kernel from http://203.143.225.228/gutsy/, and with 2.6.24-rc2 from kernel.org and the gutsy 2.6.22 config. No dice on any of them. Any suggestions?

Actually, I just changed "Satellite" to "SATELLITE" on 2.6.24-rc2 and suspend worked. So can we make the string matching case insensitive?
The match is done using match functions provided by dmi implementation, so no and I think it's correct to use exact matches there. Please post the result of dmidecode.
Hmm, well I think this very laptop used to work before. So either the case in the code changed or the case of the string on my laptop changed. It is possible that it might be the latter because I just got this laptop back from repair at the manufacturer's and then I upgraded the BIOS. If either of those changed the case, then multiple laptops of the same model might have different cases. So if making the matching case insensitive isn't right, then maybe we should include both capitalizations for all machines. I'll attach my dmidecode outpud now.

Tejun, I've been applying your patch in Ubuntu Gutsy in Launchpad Bug #139045 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/139045) Some extra cases have been found and tested - case variation on Tecra M3 - Tecra A8 - Satellite R25 - case variation on Satellite U200 I did my comparison again Linus' GIT tree to determine those. However, I believe that you already have the last of those cases (Ross Patterson's case). I'll attach the patch for the above cases.

My Tecra M6 laptop experiences the same failure.
