Susanne,
You had this working with 2.6.11, how is it with newest kernels (as of today 2.6.22+)?
If the problem still there, can you do bisect search for the patch(es) that bloke it?
Thanks.

will check it with newest kernel asap and come back to you
could you please explain to me: "...can you do bisect search for the
patch(es) that bloke it?"
thanks very much!

Well, when you have working kernel which stops working with next release, you can find actual patch or change that was incorporated and caused it not work anymore, by excluding new updates and eventually getting the one that broke your working kernel. Here is the procedure:

# install git and cogito on your computer (see kernel.org for information)

# clone Linus' tree:
cg-clone \
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git

# start bisecting:
cd linux-2.6
git bisect start
git bisect bad v2.6.18-rc5
git bisect good v2.6.18-rc4

# start round
cp /path/to/.config .
make oldconfig
make
# install kernel, check whether it's good or bad, then:
git bisect [bad|good]
# start next round

After at about 9 reboots, you'll have found the guilty commit
("... is first bad commit").

More information on git bisecting:
  man git-bisect

It takes multiple reboots and patience... but then you can tell exactly what patch introduced the problem.

Hope you can spend some time doing this - will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Comment 5 Susanne Schneider 2007-07-25 12:54:37 UTC
hi,
the version that broke my pcmcia is 2.6.13-rc1
2.6.12 still works.
I listed the related protocolls:

protocolls of kernel 2.6.12 : http://phpfi.com/252251

protocolls of kernel 2.6.13-rc1 : http://phpfi.com/252253

the compilation was done on Suse 9.3

if I can be of further help please let me know
thank's a lot for your efforts and best regards
Susanne Schneider

I'd like to compare those but it is hard when they are all
in html. Could you please make the plain ascii files
available? Perhaps attach them to this report.

Thanks.

OK, so

 diff -u messages-2-6-12.txt messages-2-6-13-rc1.txt

has this:

-kernel: cs: IO port probe 0xd400-0xd4ff: clean.
-kernel: cs: IO port probe 0xdc00-0xdcff: clean.
+kernel: pcmcia: parent PCI bridge I/O window: 0xc000 - 0xdfff
+kernel: cs: IO port probe 0xc000-0xdfff: clean.
+kernel: pcmcia: parent PCI bridge Memory window: 0xfba00000 - 0xfeafffff
kernel: cs: IO port probe 0xa00-0xaff: clean.

there were large changes in cs.c between 2.6.12 and 2.6.13-rc1, but they
all look to be fairly tame cleanups. Perhaps something broke at the PCI
level.

I'll optimistically copy Dominik, but he's been quiet lately.

Susanne, thanks for doing such a good job capturing traces, this information was very useful.
Would you mind to try bisecting the two kernels that you've identified as working and non-working now? I will help you with this process, it is not too bad.
Do you have git installed?

Comment 23 Daniel Ritz 2007-08-02 09:22:52 UTC
tried with cardmgr on two different laptops, using 2.6.22 and 2.6.23-rc1 kernels.
all works fine. a git bisect might help. please see comment #3 for an example on
how to use it.

do you have pcmciautils installed? ie. do you have the command pccardctl?
what's the output from 'cardctl ident' or 'pccardctl ident' with the card
installed? please use the non-working 2.6.18 for this.
Comment 24 Susanne Schneider 2007-08-03 14:46:08 UTC
pccarctl ident says:
linux-s:/home/susanne/video # pccardctl ident
Socket 0:
  product info: "Conceptronic MODEM", "56CLS", "5.41", ""
  manfid: 0x014e, 0x0088
  function: 2 (serial)
(Kernel: Suse10.2-default 2.6.18.2-34)

I will compile a 2.6.23-rc1 and come back to you with feedback asap
thanks a lot

Comment 25 Daniel Ritz 2007-08-03 16:44:06 UTC
so you have pcmciautils _and_ pcmcia-cs installed then? this could be the
actual problem.

what happens if you boot with 2.6.18, insert the card and then
do a 'modprobe serial_cs'? what does dmesg look after this?
Comment 26 Susanne Schneider 2007-08-04 00:30:59 UTC
I did
insert the card, then
linux-s:/home/susanne # modprobe serial_cs
linux-s:/home/susanne # dmesg
and dmesg says:

Comment 27 Daniel Ritz 2007-08-04 09:32:45 UTC
so there's no warning about IOCTL usage which means that cardmgr does not do
anything. also it seems that resources are not set up so the PCMCIA layer
does not bind the driver to the device. you could figure by doing a
  cat /sys/class/pcmcia_socket/*/available_resources_setup_done

you could also compile the kernel with CONFIG_PCMCIA_DEBUG=y and put
the line 'options pcmcia pc_debug=4' in your /etc/modprobe.conf so you
get the debug messages. also try to run 'pcmcia-socket-startup' from the
pcmciautils package before you plug the card.
Comment 28 Susanne Schneider 2007-08-06 09:20:55 UTC
I followed your recommendations:

cat /sys/class/pcmcia_socket/*/available_resources_setup_done
returned "yes"
I compiled 2.6.23-rc1 with CONFIG_PCMCIA_DEBUG=y, added 'options pcmcia pc_debug=4' to /etc/modprobe.conf
and ran 'pcmcia-socket-startup' before plugging the card - no success so far.

ok, the things doesn't look to bad. resources are set up and it tries
to bind the card to serial_cs. but here it should go one with either
an error message or a registered serial port. but it doesn't do so.

so it's an unchecked return value somewhere so that pcmcia thinks
everything is ok. looks like uart_configure_port() in serial_core.c
fails silently...i need to so some debug patch for serial_core.c,
serial_cs.c and 8250.c...but no time before saturday i think...

meanwhile you could play with your config.opts and try to include/exclude
some port ranges...mine are:
	include port 0x100-0x3af
	include port 0x3e0-0x4ff
	include port 0x820-0x8ff
	include port 0xc00-0xcf7
also try to exclude the ports initially reported in dmesg like
cs: IO port probe bla-bla: clean
one at a time. you can also do that via sysfs by just using
	echo -n "0x100-0x3af" > /sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket0/available_resources_io
to add a new io range or
	echo -n "- 0x100-0x3af" > /sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket0/available_resources_io
to remove an io range. just eject/insert the card to test new settings.
to display the settings just use 'cat' on the file.

for starters try with the ranges reported by the working kernel...

ok, the things doesn't look to bad. resources are set up and it tries
to bind the card to serial_cs. but here it should go one with either
an error message or a registered serial port. but it doesn't do so.

so it's an unchecked return value somewhere so that pcmcia thinks
everything is ok. looks like uart_configure_port() in serial_core.c
fails silently...i need to so some debug patch for serial_core.c,
serial_cs.c and 8250.c...but no time before saturday i think...

meanwhile you could play with your config.opts and try to include/exclude
some port ranges...mine are:
	include port 0x100-0x3af
	include port 0x3e0-0x4ff
	include port 0x820-0x8ff
	include port 0xc00-0xcf7
also try to exclude the ports initially reported in dmesg like

Comment 31 Susanne Schneider 2007-08-08 13:27:03 UTC
I adjusted config.opts in terms of io-ports and those are clean now, no
more "excluding...":
........................................
pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0
cs: IO port probe 0x100-0x2f7: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0x300-0x3af: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0x3e0-0x3ff: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0x4d8-0x4ff: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0x820-0x8ff: clean.
cs: IO port probe 0xc00-0xcf7: clean.
ds: re-scanning socket 0
ds: update device information for 0.0
ds: re-scanning socket 0
ds: update device information for 0.0
ds: registering driver serial_cs
ds: trying to match 0.0 to serial_cs
ds: trying to match 0.0 to serial_cs
ds: trying to match 0.0 to serial_cs...
........................................

that job was easy...
but memory probe still returns the usual
..................................................
cs: memory probe 0xfba00000-0xfeafffff: excluding 0xfbd10000-0xfc01ffff
0xfc330000-0xfd27ffff 0xfdec0000-0xfe1cffff 0xfe7f0000-0xfeafffff
..................................................

changing the memorysettings in config.opts accordingly doesn't have any
influence...
thanks a lot so far for your efforts!

That means "this doesn't respond like a serial port" - the interrupt
enable register appears to be ignoring writes, or something is
interfering with reads from the register.
Comment 35 Daniel Ritz 2007-08-12 10:09:42 UTC
looks like it's not talking to the hardware at all. i'm a bit lost about it.
please do the 'git bisect' stuff as described in comment #3...
Comment 36 Natalie Protasevich 2007-08-12 10:33:48 UTC
Susanne, let's try doing the bisect. I am preparing "better instructions" on this, so if we go through the process together it might help to make this document really useful for the future. There are some culprits that you might run into but most of the times this is a pretty straightforward process. As soon as you find an obstacle, just update this bugzilla. This will be great for making instructions, because nobody ever report what they went through to get bisecting done :)
Comment 37 Susanne Schneider 2007-08-12 12:18:53 UTC
okidoki, so I will try to find the culprit bisecting between 2.6.12 and
2.6.13-rc1 in my Suse 9.3.
If I run into trouble I will post it, be sure *lol*
thanks

hi,
I'm in process bisecting between 2.6.12 and 2.6.13-rc1.
towards the end of compilation of the 3rd trial I get an error message:

Aha, ok you hit the nasty one, which is talked about here http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/v1.0.13/howto/isolate-bugs-with-bisect.txt
Towards the end, read:
It really works wonderfully well, except for the case where there was
_another_ commit that broke something in between, like introduced some
stupid compile error. In that case you should not mark that commit good or
bad: you should try to find another commit close-by, and do a "git reset
--hard <newcommit>" to try out _that_ commit instead, and then test that
instead (and mark it good or bad).

You can do "git bisect visualize" while you do all this to see what's
going on by starting up gitk on the bisection range.

How about that? git-reset --hard <some close commit here>, then git bisect visualize - and see what happens...
Comment 40 Susanne Schneider 2007-08-14 09:19:52 UTC
got it - continue bisecting...

Dominik, can you give us a hand? Susanne graciously did her part, can you look in this now and advise - We are "losing" the bus and resources all messed up on that laptop.
Thanks.
Comment 45 Daniel Ritz 2007-08-18 09:19:07 UTC
thanks for bisecting. so it's a resource problem after all. the change you
identified itself looks ok. the problem is that either some other device is
on those i/o addresses, or i/o cycles are not forwarded correctly.
- could you post full 'lspci -vvv' output (all devices)?
- post the output of
    cat /sys/devices/pci*/*/yenta_registers
  with the card inserted
- do those two:
    echo -n "- 0xc000 - 0xdfff" > /sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket0/available_resources_io
    echo -n "0xd400 - 0xd4ff" > /sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket0/available_resources_io
  before inserting the card
Comment 46 Susanne Schneider 2007-08-18 10:07:21 UTC
so first item is in attachment "lspci-Asus-A4K"
second one is in "yenta_registers"
and third one, after putting in those two commands:

    echo -n "- 0xc000 - 0xdfff" >
/sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket0/available_resources_io
    echo -n "0xd400 - 0xd4ff" >
/sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket0/available_resources_io

 dmesg says:
"............
cs: IO port probe 0xd400-0xd4ff: clean.
pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0
linux-s:/home/susanne # "

I did this now in my prod-system Suse 10.2 with Susekernel 2.6.18-2-34
cause it's just busy, if I should repeat the last two items with that
specially debugging-patched 2.6.23-rc2 please let me know
