Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur: Vendor Kernel 2.6.16.13 and 2.6.16.21 both from OpenSuSE 10.1 Distribution: OpenSuSE 10.1 Hardware Environment: Laptop Toshiba M45-S355 Software Environment: KDE 3.5.1 Problem Description: When I shutdown my laptop, my HD make a strange "click" when laptop turn-off. I found this problem in SuSE 10.0 (vendor kernel 2.6.13) but NOT in OpenSuSE 10.1 (vendor kernel 2.6.16.13 and 2.6.16.21). This problem still occur in Kernel 2.6.17.x and 2.6.18RC3 (both from kernel.org). I don't try more versions. I attach a small mp3 file (25kb) with this sound comment by me. My HD don't have problem!

Newer kernels put the drive into power saving mode on power off so that wouldn't suprise me at all if the drive went "boink" as it parked the heads.
Alan, Kernel 2.6.13 have this problem Kernel 2.6.16 don't have problem Kernel 2.6.18 have this problem So, it's not real that only newer Kernel have this "bug", because one intermediate version don't show this problem. Why this intermediate Kernel don't have problem? Best regards
What problem, parking the heads is not a problem
However I am worried with this "boink", because this sound appear only in "original" Kernel (not Vendor Kernel). In MS Windows I don't have this strange sound, but if you say that is no problem, I understand you. Thank you so much!
this is libata bug not a IDE one
On the second though I should have marked it is a duplicate not reopen it. Fixed, sorry for the noise. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 7674 ***
