Writing CDs or DVD with my external USB enclosure + BenQ DW-1610 sometimes fails because of USB errors. I noticed that even on successful burns there are resets of the USB drive enclosure happening which I suspect are not normal. Had it happen on a DVD+RW recently. Writing stopped with the kernel continuously doing kernel: usb 1-1.2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 Had to unload ehci_hcd to stop it.
Are you running HALD?
Yes, I do. (Running Gnome 2.14)
Try turning off hald.
