I use Debian 7 (x86_64 version) in a virtual machine (virtualbox) and have two kernels, the original version and the 3.2.53 I compiled. I might point out that this virtual machine is not professional, I use at home to study. To save memory, I downloaded the 2.6.32.61 kernels/2.6.34.14 available on kernel.org site main page.
