Description Eric Blackwell 2013-12-06 19:48:13 UTC
After installing acpid on my ThinkPad w530, I begin to see the issue. The issue is with the kworker threads using 100% of one of my cores under 'sy'. This issue happens when I dock, or undock, my laptop. If I put the laptop to sleep after the threads go to 100%, and then wake it up, the threads disappear, and everything returns to 'normal'. The issue still persists even after removing acpid from the system completely. I checked all of the files listed on the acpid package, and none exist any longer. The issue appears to be around gpe11. Even after disabling this gpe per this thread:
http://sudoremember.blogspot.com/2013/05/high-cpu-usage-due-to-kworker.html

Doing the above did not seem to resolve the issue for me, as you can see below, even though the gpe11 is set to disabled, it still has a very high value.

Additional info:
* package version(s)
* config and/or log files etc.

Steps to reproduce:
1. install acpid
2. dock/undock laptop
3. monitor 'top'.
4.(put laptop to sleep 'resolves' the issue).
Comment 1 Lan Tianyu 2013-12-08 13:04:17 UTC
Please provide the output of acpidump and dmesg after the issue happen.

Did GPE11 number still increase after disabling it?
The large number means it has been triggered so many times.
Comment 2 Eric Blackwell 2013-12-10 19:49:41 UTC
Archlinux doesn't have acpidump that I can find anywhere. And yes, GPE11 still kept going up even after I disabled it. not as fast, but it did.

Please do following steps to make acpidump:
cd $(kernel_source)/tools/power/acpi
make && make install
Comment 4 David Runge 2013-12-12 19:12:39 UTC
@Eric Blackwell: acpidump is part of the iasl package in Archlinux.

as requested.
Comment 7 Lan Tianyu 2013-12-13 03:31:17 UTC
GPE 11 belongs to EC.

Please run the following command and then produce the bug. Attach the output of dmesg. BTW, the log maybe huge and so please add kernel parameter "log_buf_len=10M".
echo "file ec.c +p" > /sys/kernel/debug/dynamic_debug/control

Please also attach the output of "powertop --html".

Sorry for confusion. Please run "powertop --html" under root privilege which will produce "powertop.html" file. Attach the file.

powertop.html

Powertop.html as requested. Sorry about the mixup.
Comment 15 Lan Tianyu 2013-12-23 01:20:35 UTC
From the output of powertop's software info tab, the nouveau_connector_hotplug_work occupies a lot of time and this function is called by nouveau driver.
I just check this machine has two graphic cards. Please try switching to intel graphic card and test again.
Comment 16 Eric Blackwell 2014-01-20 19:17:58 UTC
Using the intel chip totally fixes the issue....But that doesn't actually fix the problem.
If I use the intel chip only, then I can not use any external monitors, which makes using the Docking station pretty pointless, and wouldn't matter anyway, since the bug only happens when docking and undocking the laptop.

But, yes, you are right, in that it is related to the nouveau driver.
Comment 17 Lan Tianyu 2014-01-21 05:38:51 UTC
So this should be a nonveau driver related bug. Reassign to non-intel video component first.
Comment 18 Eric Blackwell 2014-03-25 00:37:24 UTC
Any progress on this?

I have the T460p running RHEL and have this same exact issue when I wake the laptop up from sleep while it's docked. Undocking makes it go away. I tried unplugging everything but the power cord from the docking station but that didn't help.
