Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur:2.6.11 Distribution: kernel.org Hardware Environment: Intel 3.2GHz processor, D945Gnt Motherboard Software Environment: Linux / Fedora 4 Problem Description: This note describes problems with Linux and the INTEL D945GNT Motherboard. From my earliest available kernel, (2.6.11.1) thru the current (2.6.16-rc5-git8) I see these error messages in the boot log: PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 1 of device 0000:05:01.0 PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 2 of device 0000:05:01.0 I have updated to the current BIOS, no change. In the 2.6.11.1 kernel this does not seem to cause a problem. I could not test the 2.5.12.x series of kernels, as I got errors hopefully unrelated to this problem. Starting in 2.6.13.x I now get 3 error messages, viz PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 1 of device 0000:05:01.0 PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 2 of device 0000:05:01.0 PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6:20000@48000000 for 0000:01:00.0 At this point the kernel still comes up, and things seem to work. In 2.6.14.x thru 2.6.16-rc5-git8, I get the same three messages, but now the network no longer comes up. Cat'ing /proc/modules shows that the driver is loaded, and Live but /sbin/ifconfig -a does not show eth0. I see these same messages when I pull everyting but the Nvidia video card, namely the ethernet, the soundblaster, and the SCSI card, or with the nvidia or nv video driver. At the moment, anything that needs a current kernel, I am having to do on an older machine (same processor), with a D875PBZ Motherboard, where these errors do not occurr. Im not sure what will be useful. I have boot logs for (11.1, 11.12, 13.1, 13,5, 14.1, 15, 15.1, 16-rc5-git8) The 12.x series kernels never seem to make it far enough to commit anything to the log. As a start, I will attach a lspci -v, and a log from the 2.6.16-rc5-git8 boot, the above error messages are about 115 lines down from the top of the boot. --- /sbin/lspci -v 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Does this still happen in 2.6.16-rc5? The messages might still be there, but the device should now work.
In 2.6.16-rc5-git8 the messages are there, and the ethernet device (mine, not the onboard which has never worked), does not work. a /sbin/ifconfig -a does not show it a /proc/modules does show the driver sk98lin, and says it is Live. and in the messages ON SCREEN (it does not get into the messages file) there is a message that reads bringing up interface eth0: sk98lin device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. I am going to assume that this is related.

use the skge driver ("New SysKonnect GigaEthernet", CONFIG_SKGE), not sk98lin. DLink support got removed from sk98lin in 2.6.14.
The error seems to occur long before the modules are loaded, so having the wrong modules shouldnt make any difference. I have changed modprobe.conf so that the eth0 alias points at skge, and tried the experiment with 2.6.17.11. The output is essentially the same as above.

Mr. Redinald, Have you tried latest kernels? The MSI interrupts handling had problems, now it should be working better. You can also try "nomsi" to swith to full ioapic mode. It would be easier to see the problem if you provided a trace for the working kernel vs. non-vorking. Also, if this is a regression from 2.6.11 you can try running bisect search on source trees to identify the patch(es) that broke it for you. Thanks.

I am running 2.6.20 and 2.6.21 now, and am not sure just which previous kernel it was that fixed the problem.
Awesome, the bug can be closed then. Thanks!
