Upgraded from 11.04 Kubuntu to 12.04 then it immediately recommended an upgrade to 13.04 which was completed. Prior to the upgrades all was well. Subsequently, the system now hangs randomly with the screen, mouse and keyboard not responding for a varying time period ranging from a few seconds to over 1 min. The system then recovers and carries on as if nothing was wrong... Meanwhile, an "ssh" session via putty lets me log in and wander around as if nothing is wrong. "htop" shows nothing unexpected at the top of the process list. It's a dual-screen set-up, one analogue, one digital, both 1680x1050. I tried a kernel upgrade but to no benefit. What info do I need to provide to help diagnose this? uname, lspci, lsusb and lshw outputs listed below. uname -a Linux tigger 3.9.8-030908-generic #201307010556 SMP Mon Jul 1 09:57:47 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux lsusb Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:0850 Logitech, Inc. More info. Firefox has always been slow handling facebook.com pages and sometimes reports script time-outs. kactivitymanagerd was running at 100% CPU so based on recommendation found on other pages, I killed this process. I also killed off firefox and switched to Chromium instead. Since then I have had no further lock-ups. Surely an application such as firefox should not be able to cause such a screen/keyboard/mouse lock-up? Not sure what kactivitymanagerd is but the system seemed happy for me to kill it off and it has restarted itself.
Spoke too soon. Now locking up without firefox.
Created a new user so that a whole new configuration would be set up - no difference, it still locks. Used various different window managers instead of KDE - it still locks. Upgraded my graphics card, lspci now shows : 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Turks XT [Radeon HD 6670] 01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Turks/Whistler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6000 Series] Not locked up yet... So, as everything was OK with the old card on ubuntu 11.04, but locks randomly on 13.04 I would speculate that this is a regression in the part of the Radeon driver that handles the older versions of the Radeon cards. I.e. an upgrade from 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV610 [Radeon HD 2400 PRO] to 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Turks XT [Radeon HD 6670] cures the problem.
Post the current status of the Xorg when inputs freezed ? using cat /proc/xxxx/status by ssh via network, when all keyboard and mouse freezed. xxxx is the pid of the Xorg.
Since I upgraded the graphics card I have not had any hangs. The machine is my main development system so I cannot afford the time to re-install the old card. If it locks again, I'll post the pid as requested.
