After upgrade to 2.6.13 the scanner is recognized proprely but xsane faild with message: "Failed to open device `sm3600:3/1`: Error during device I/O." The fault is present for normal user and root. Also kooka failed with complaining about sane-backends instalation. The sane-backends and xsane was reemerged. Summary should be updated; this has been reproduced on unpatched 2.6.14-rc5 so it is not a gentoo-specific bug.
Does SANE use libusb? If it does, this probably indicates that you need to upgrade your copy of libusb.
