Description Alexander Hunziker 2012-12-01 00:03:42 UTC
When I try to watch video on an external screen (connected via HDMI), I often experience a system freeze, typically after about 30 minutes of playback. The content of the screen freezes, but audio keeps playing. In fact, the system seems responsive still (i.e. responds to mouse clicks), but the picture on the screen is frozen. I have to hard reset the machine to get it operable again.

This is on Arch Linux, Gnome 3.6, happens with both Totem and VLC.

Please advise how to debug that issue.

Some details about your machine would be interesting for a start:

Specifically please check whether a gpu hang is reported at that time, and if so grab the i915_error_state (if your distro is good, it'll dump it somewhere when the gpu hang uevent gets fired off).
