Description Nathan Jackson 2012-11-09 05:22:30 UTC
I've posted this bug over on Launchpad for Ubuntu, but this issue is happening in both Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10. I upgraded to 12.10 hoping to fix the issue. Additionally, I used to use Arch Linux (kernel 3.6) and I was having the same issue.

My laptop, Dell Studio 1569 will not shutdown in Linux. I can shutdown from either a graphical user interface or a terminal but the outcome is the same when I shutdown or restart.

The kernel complains about a CPU Soft Lockup. The kernel says either Will Now Halt or Will Now Restart but never does. It simply says that it has some sort of CPU stall.

See here as well: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1072350

Comment 2 Alan 2012-11-09 14:21:14 UTC
Do you also get a traceback with the soft lockup message ?
Comment 3 Nathan Jackson 2012-11-09 14:40:46 UTC
No.
Comment 4 Alan 2012-11-09 14:57:19 UTC
Ok first thing then is to work out if its a platform problem or a driver thing and if so which drivers.

You should be able to boot the machine with the boot option init=/bin/sh and get nothing running but an initial shell, then type poweroff -f at the command line to power the machine back off.

(you may need to ask the Ubuntu forums how to do this as I'm not that familiar with Ubuntu specific bits)

If that fails then it may be tricky, if that works then it implies one of the other drivers is getting stuck - and that is something that can be hunted down methodically.
Comment 5 Nathan Jackson 2012-11-09 15:27:09 UTC
Okay, so that method allows my laptop to shutdown completely. I had to remove "quiet splash" to replace with init=/bin/sh but it does shutdown using that method.

Another point of information I just noticed. If I shutdown my laptop within a few minutes of turning it on (lets say less than 5) the computer powers off no problem. Otherwise, if I leave it running for an extended period (or normal period of time) it gets stuck during shutdown.
Comment 6 Nathan Jackson 2012-11-09 16:17:23 UTC
UPDATE:

I am now also getting a hard cpu lockup at shutdown. The problem is random. I was able to get a picture of my screen but the output wasn't displayed in any log that I could find.

Comment 7 Nathan Jackson 2012-11-10 14:55:06 UTC
Okay additionally, standby does not work.
Comment 8 Len Brown 2012-11-13 03:09:50 UTC
Did this machine come with Windows, and did that shutdown properly?
If you saved your windows partition, that would be useful for comparison...
Comment 9 Nathan Jackson 2012-11-13 18:10:55 UTC
Yes, but I've since reinstalled windows and different distros of Linux.

I do have a Windows partition.
Comment 10 Nathan Jackson 2012-12-13 22:36:21 UTC
Update: no ACPI functions seem to work with the exception of the backlight. Suspend fails, shutdown and restart still fail.

Any help is appreciated.
Comment 11 Nathan Jackson 2012-12-13 22:40:38 UTC
Additionally: all ACPI functions seem to work okay within the first few minutes of the machine running. However, if I shutdown say 5 minutes after using the computer, the ACPI functions fail.

Confirmed that this bug happens using Slackware 14, it's got to be in the kernel.

Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the report. Can you please try to identify which kernels work and which don't(e.g. 3.0, 3.1, etc.)?
