Description Denis Roy 2005-07-29 22:54:16 UTC
Distribution: Gentoo 2005.0
Hardware Environment: AMD Sempron 2400+, the motherboard is a MSI K7N2 DELTA2 (nForce 2
chipset) and I'm trying to use a Maxtor 6B300R0 ATA133 hard disk into a SATA150 external enclosure
(it uses some kind of SATA -> ULTRA-ATA133 adapter).
Software Environment: File Server/Home Gateway, no X server at all (CLI only).
Problem Description: When writing a lot of files (ex.: simple data backup using cp), the files transfert
stops after a while and I get IRQ #201 disabled into the console.

Here's the kernel error log (the most interesting part):
irq 201: nobody cared!

Comment 2 Andrew Morton 2005-08-04 16:37:13 UTC
Denis, are you able to identify an earlier 2.6.x version whcih
worked OK?
Comment 3 Denis Roy 2005-08-05 19:05:54 UTC
No. Unfortunatly, it never worked for me and I'm using this machine since kernel 2.6.7.
Comment 4 Denis Roy 2005-08-06 23:22:02 UTC
I tought it could be usefull to post more information about the chip used to bridge SATA and PATA
busses. Well, it is a Silicon Image SataLink Sil 3611 and you can find some kind of information about it
there: http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?id=30&ptid=1 .
Comment 5 Dan Carpenter 2005-08-07 01:45:05 UTC
Is there any way you could attach the entire dmesg?

Also could you do a `grep -i iommu /var/log/messages*`. I'm just curious if
this is related to a bug I saw a while back. (Probably not)

Entire dmesg
Comment 7 Denis Roy 2005-08-07 23:17:24 UTC
I just attached the entire dmesg. However, it is impossible to do a grep of /var/log/messages because this
file doesn't exist on my box (Gentoo). And if I do it with /var/log/everything/*, I get nothing at all.

Denis,
Have you tested with latest kernels, is the problem still there?
Thanks.

How about you Jarno?
It's been many changes to this subsystem, have you tested with latest kernels since then?
Thanks.

Rejecting as INSUFFICIENT_DATA for now. Reopen if the problem is still present in newer kernels. Thanks.
