bug report on LaunchPad

I have installed (L)Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit on a Acer Travelmate 5735 but the wireless card is not working properly. I have tried with proprietary driver (proposed by Lubuntu), with or without acer-wmi module blacklisted.
I can see wlan0 as network interface but I can't see any wireless network available.
I have tried with the default kernel and the upstream 3.4.0-030400rc4-generic

Comment 1 Arend van Spriel 2012-05-12 15:17:12 UTC
In the WifiSyslog.txt on launchpad I see a warning over and over in net/mac80211/rx.c. I am not sure where to obtain the matching source tree for your kernel. Can you find out what warning is in net/mac80211/rx.c?

Gr. AvS
Comment 2 Stefano Fraccaro 2012-05-14 07:35:50 UTC
I have reinstalled a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.4.0.-rc6. If you want I can give you an ssh access to the machine... or give me instructions :-)
I can't execute apport-collect with the mainline kernel and I don't know where I can find WiFiSyslog.txt informations
Comment 3 Arend van Spriel 2012-05-14 09:55:56 UTC
So you are using plain 3.4.0-rc6 now. The output of the dmesg command will do. I just need the line number of the warning. I have git access to the appropriate kernel sources.
Comment 4 Stefano Fraccaro 2012-05-14 12:29:27 UTC
With this new kernel I see only a bluetooth device but not a wireless... and I'm unable to install the proprietary driver. I append all the dmesg log

The brcmsmac driver is not loaded. The wireless card has bcma listed as kernel module, but not a driver in use. Do you have bcma blacklisted? Since 3.3 kernel this should not be done as brcmsmac now depends on bcma.
Comment 9 Stefano Fraccaro 2012-05-15 11:31:19 UTC
Searching for blacklist files, I have found a file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-bcm43.conf that contains:

# Warning: This file is autogenerated by bcmwl. All changes to this file will b$
blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
blacklist ssb
blacklist bcm43xx
blacklist brcm80211
blacklist brcmfmac

I have removed bcmwl-kernel-source. I see wlan0 device but I'm unable to detect any SSID (we have 2 public ssid with WPA2)

Another thing. Do you have configuration details about the two APs you mention? What channel/frequency, etc?

Your device has channel 13 disabled so your APs are not found. Bit weird there are no scan results at all.

            * 2472 MHz [13] (disabled)

what is the output of 'wlan reg get'? You can try to configure another country, eg. 'sudo iw reg set IT'. Not sure if that will work as it depends on what the device is approved for.
Comment 15 Arend van Spriel 2012-05-15 16:52:40 UTC
I mean 'iw reg get' instead of 'wlan reg get'!
Comment 16 Stefano Fraccaro 2012-05-16 06:13:33 UTC
country US:
	(2402 - 2472 @ 40), (3, 27)
	(5170 - 5250 @ 40), (3, 17)
	(5250 - 5330 @ 40), (3, 20), DFS
	(5490 - 5600 @ 40), (3, 20), DFS
	(5650 - 5710 @ 40), (3, 20), DFS
	(5735 - 5835 @ 40), (3, 30)

after your command:
country IT:
	(2402 - 2482 @ 40), (N/A, 20)
	(5170 - 5250 @ 40), (N/A, 20)
	(5250 - 5330 @ 40), (N/A, 20), DFS
	(5490 - 5710 @ 40), (N/A, 27), DFS

and the wireless is working correctly! thanks :-)
But I don't understand with channel 13 was disabled: country US has range 2402-2472...
Comment 17 Arend van Spriel 2012-05-16 11:12:12 UTC
That range is including the bandwith used. So a channel uses spectrum from center_freq-(bw/2) until center_freq+(bw/2).

So for US with 20MHz BW this means the center_freq of the highest 2.4G channel is 2472-10=2462 => channel 11.

My Ubuntu Launchpad Bug was merged with the above referenced Launchpad Bug because I had the same experience on an upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04, though I have a Broadcom BCM4313 chip in my Acer Aspire One D260.

I wanted to note here I discovered a workaround that gets wireless working on my system -- found at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1879096

Using that procedure:

1) removed a package -- I believe it was bcmwl-kernel-source

2) added two lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

blacklist bcma
blacklist brcm80211

3) installed:
bcmwl-kernel-source
broadcom-sta-common
broadcom-sta-source
firmware-b43-installer
(which drew in 11 other packages including b43-fwcutter)

After the package installation completed and the system rebooted, wireless works fine.
