some helpful info

*Overview: The cooling fan is working non-stop while testing 12.04 Beta 2.

Temperatures are being maintained around:
Thermal 0: ok, 58.0 degrees C
Thermal 1: ok, 48.0 degrees C
Thermal 2: ok, 51.0 degrees C

*Device: Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop (lshw: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/bobmerhebi/Dell%20Studio%20XPS%201640)

*Steps to reproduce: Turn on laptop & log in into Ubuntu 12.04LTS Beta 2 Desktop AMD64

*Actual Results: Cooling fan works non-stop

*Expected Results: Fan should cool the hardware & slow down &/or stop running until needed?!

*Build Date & Platform:Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Beta amd64 (20120328)

there is no ACPI fan control in this laptops.
so my suggestion would be
1. close the bug
2. check BIOS options and see if there is something related, e.g. "Fan always on when AC".
3. if no, upgrade your BIOS.

maybe there are some platform hacks to enable the fan control, but that is out of my scope. Sorry that I can not help you on this.

Oh, BTW, you can try the tricks in bug #42605 and see if it helps.

Is that just the fan control or do you mean all acpi sensors?
I already have acpi package installed

I'll do that.

I haven't checked yet, I will soon though I am sure that there's nothing of this sort.

Bios is already latest!

Thanks; I checked it but I prefer I stay with the current status for now; It seems to be working good now.


Note: As a matter of fact, I think the fan is working well. It's not always on any more! Maybe it was just the Beta release! The temperatures stated in the initial Description are still relevant though I now think they are acceptable?
