When EEPROM is removed from the board which carries the EDID information, system failed to load EDID information from VBIOS. The intel sandy bridge graphics only shows maximum of 800x600 resolution.

2.6.38 is really old for sandybridge, presumably this is fixed already on a recent kernel like 3.5. If that's not the case, please reopen and attach the complete dmesg with drm.debug=0xe added to your kernel cmdline.
