The laptop is this:

http://smolt.fedoraproject.org/show?uuid=pub_6b41cf99-ff17-46cc-a58a-fb307b529155+

When running on battery power the brightness keys don't work. These keys are Fn+F5 and Fn+F6. Even an evtest /dev/input/event3 running at the console (i.e. outside X) doesn't output anything when pressing them.

Actually the brightness key events come through /dev/input/event6 ("Sony Vaio Keys") on kernels that work (i.e. not on 2.6.38.2).

I just tested both 2.6.35.12 and 2.6.39-rc1-git1 and they both work, i.e. evtest outputs the events and gnome-power-manager adjusts the brightness.

On 2.6.38.2, as I said, the events don't come through. The brightness itself is always adjustable using gnome-power-manager's brightness slider though.

So everything works on .39, but is broken in .38?

I don't have the hardware anymore. Sorry for the noise.
