Distribution:Knoppix and/or Fedora Hardware Environment: Software Environment: Problem Description: ISA pnp modem recognized and works correctly with 2.4 Kernel but not 2.6 Kernel Steps to reproduce: Knoppix: Set up modem using Knoppix 3.4 and Kernel 2.4; confirm it works ok. Note isapnp recognizes modem in early part of dmesg and kppp modules are loaded near end of dmesg. Save Knoppix configuration. Reboot Knoppix using Kernel 2.6. Note modem no longer works. Note kppp modules now not mentioned in dmesg. Fedora: Similarly demonstrate the ISA modem is handled by Fedora Core 1 (kernel 2.4) and not handled Fedora Core 2 (kernel 2.6) with otherwise identical setups.
The necessary modules ppp_generic and ppp_deflate are found, but the ISA modem will not initialize as either /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1 as it does in Fedora Core 1. Some linkage like /dev/ppp may need to be established somewhere, but I've not found where.
It may be detection related. Could I see the serial portion of your dmesg in 2.6? It will look something like this: Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ 8 ports, IRQ sharing disabled ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A ttyS4 at I/O 0xdfe0 (irq = 9) is a 16550A

FC2 dmesg | tty yields ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A 3. setserial /dev/ttyS0 irq 4 port 0x3f8 and setserial /dev/ttys1 irq 3 port 0x2f8 do not accomplish anything on FC2 4. Using 'query modem' on FC2 kppp initialization .... goes thru the motions for either ttyS0 or ttyS1 but nothing gets initialized 5. For FC2, ppp0 does not show up on 'trusted devices' list as it does on FC1; instead there is a sit0, whatever that is. 6. In FC1 kpp is set up on /dev/ttyS2 irq 5 port 0x3e8; and it works. This isn't an option on the FC2 dmesg, nor does it give any initialization action.

I don't know how to use such a patch. Sorry. What works for me is adding the following line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local: setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart16550A irq 5 These are the parameters FC1 indicates in dmesg. This rc.local line isn't necessary in FC1. In my frame of reference, it seems like FC2 doesn't do the pnpdump part of the isapnp dance correctly. Just an analogy. I hope this helps you judge your patch.

Bogdan, FWIW: It might be helpful to determine these two results: setserial /dev/ttyS2 and setserial /dev/ttyS3. This might show an irq conflict which you might then resolve with a judicious irq re-assignment using setserial in /etc/rc.d/rc.local. The problem may not lie in the kernel. It may be in the setup process, say kudzu.
