Description SuchBlue 2021-12-05 08:27:39 UTC
My Blue Yeti microphone (ID 046d:0ab7) stops working when I reboot my system. The microphone still is detected, but there is no sound coming out of it. Once I replug it, it starts working again. This happens on every distro I have tried, so it is definitely a kernel issue but it doesn't occur on Windows. In this case, (to be on the safe side) I have even compiled kernel 5.15.6 on Debian 11 and it is what I am running right now. If this could be fixed I would gladly appreciate it as I really wish to use Linux but it is impossible for me to do so without microphone functionality.

I have experienced this problem also for at least 2 years. As well as losing sound after a reboot, I would lose sound after about a day of uptime without rebooting. To determine whether my Yeti had a hardware problem, I tested it on my Windows laptop and I did not lose sound after a day and I had sound after a reboot so the issue is with Linux -- not with the Yeti.

I became tired of dealing with the Yeti issues so I purchased an Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone and I have had no issues. The AT2020USB+ doesn't support all of the patterns of the Yeti, but the AT2020USB+ does support the basic cardioid (front) pattern, which is what most people need. Meanwhile, I put the Yeti on my shelf.

For anyone that is still experiencing this issue, on my MSI motherboard I have an option called "ErP Ready" where USB power is cut off when the system is shut down but continues to receive power. This allows me to shut down the system instead of restart it, which serves as a workaround to this issue.

I know someone who is experiencing this on Windows too, so this may also be useful to non-Linux users.

If I recall correctly, although the ErP fix did work when I rebooted the system, it didn't work for the case when my computer returned from suspend mode. My motherboard is an ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero motherboard. Nevertheless, I'm fine with my AT2020USB+ mic, although I miss the hardware mic mute button on the Yeti.

Also, the other problem is that when you configure ErP to cut power on shutdown, you lose the power to all USB ports that you could have used to charge a device, such as a phone. Also, if you like to see the effects of your USB LED keyboard even when the computer is "off", then that capability disappears, too.
