kernel BUG at lib/list_debug.c:53!

I'm currently experiencing this issue on Debian 10 (up-to-date as of now). Not sure if it's a bug on AMDGPU driver, if I'm doing something wrong, Debian 10 problem or anything else.

I installed Debian 10 on my Dell laptop and used it for several months before my new motherboard arrives. During this time, hibernation was working flawlessly (except Wi-Fi was not working after waking up, but I was using LAN, so it was okay).

After my new motherboard (Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. AB350M-DS3H V2/AB350M-DS3H V2-CF, BIOS F50 12/02/2019) arrived, I then moved the SSD with the installation into my desktop and started using it. I removed the NVIDIA drivers from Debian repository and installed my AMDGPU drivers, configured Xorg, and so on. At first sight, I noticed that hibernation was not working. Whenever I went into hibernation mode through Plasma, I'd get the screen back up again, but I was still okay with this, so I kept using my desktop.

After some time, I thought it'd be great to have hibernation, so I decided to reinstall Debian 10. In the Debian 10 live USB stick, I got a freeze for the first time, and I thought it was something wrong with the media, so I reflashed it and ended up reinstalling through netinst.

Now I have constant freezes, and I finally got something useful from syslog. When I read the call trace, it seems to be related to AMDGPU driver. Not sure if using a more recent kernel would help in this case, but I'd appreciate any tips.

My GPU is: XFX RX 590 FatBoy Edition 8GB

I just tried Linux 5.6, problem persisted after leaving the computer in idle for literally a minute.

More possibly relevant logs and more system info

These logs were taken from /var/log folder. I took only the ones which I think are relevant to this issue. I also added more system information and wanted to clarify some info that I think was not clear on my first comment:

1. The SSD was taken from a Dell laptop after Debian 10 installation was finished and used for several months. (see Dell lspci at the end)
2. The same SSD was later placed at a desktop computer and then I removed the old NVIDIA drivers and installed new GPU drivers (see lspci inside logs_and_info.7z file)

Changed my AMDGPU for an old NVIDIA card and nothing changed

Changed my AMDGPU for an old NVIDIA card. Got a freeze after `sudo reboot` in a black screen and had to manually power the computer off and on again. Please refer to logs attached. New GPU information is attached as well on lspci output at the end of attached file.

Comment 8 Victor Queiroz 2020-07-24 02:09:32 UTC
Ok, I went back to my modern GPU:

06:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Ellesmere [Radeon RX 470/480] (rev e1)
06:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Ellesmere HDMI Audio [Radeon RX 470/480 / 570/580/590]

Now I've compiled a pristine kernel version (4.19.134) with `CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU=y` and I'm booting with the following flags:

BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.19.134-ryzen root=UUID=6ad59cc0-d603-4e56-9c33-032ca56cbc0a ro intel_idle.max_cstate=0 processor.max_cstate=1 idle=nomwait cpuidle.off=1 rcu_nocbs=0-11

I also disabled PBO into several places of my BIOS (will check again and post here). Will continue to be vigilant regarding the freezes and use the computer everyday. I hope freezes are gone for now. But I will only be sure after more common-day usage.
Comment 9 Paul Menzel 2020-07-24 05:21:22 UTC
Some hints without having a solution:

1. Please open a support issue at Gigabyte, asking for a fixed firmware version.
2. If you could verify somehow, that the problems also happen with Microsoft Windows, that would help a lot. (But I think, Microsoft Windows will work without issues.)
3. What does https://github.com/r4m0n/ZenStates-Linux show?
4. Please always attach output of `dmesg` if possible. Pasting the journal logs into a comment is too confusing. Please paste the stacktrace at most.
5. Is the behavior always the same? When it freezes/hangs, that means it does not reboot by itself, and the last screen content is still visible.
6. Do you have any `Hardware Error` messages in your log?
Comment 10 Paul Menzel 2020-07-24 05:24:31 UTC
7. Ask AMD for an RMA for the processor.
Comment 11 Victor Queiroz 2020-07-24 14:04:12 UTC
Hi, Mr. Menzel. Thank you so much for your comment and hints.

1. Will definitely do

2. The problem never happened with Windows so far. I can use the PC for hours and not a single crash

3. Here is the output of `sudo python zenstates.py --list`:

P0 - Enabled - FID = 98 - DID = 8 - VID = 48 - Ratio = 38.00 - vCore = 1.10000
P1 - Enabled - FID = 8C - DID = A - VID = 58 - Ratio = 28.00 - vCore = 1.00000
P2 - Enabled - FID = 84 - DID = C - VID = 68 - Ratio = 22.00 - vCore = 0.90000
P3 - Disabled
P4 - Disabled
P5 - Disabled
P6 - Disabled
P7 - Disabled
C6 State - Package - Disabled
C6 State - Core - Disabled

4. Of course. Thanks for the tip

5. Not always the same. If, for example, I use an NVIDIA graphics card, then the computer not always will be locked. I'll be able to see lockup warnings on the journal and I will also be able to listen to a beep on each lockup warning. So it seems that AMDGPU together with the CPU bug, will cause the system to hang. Maybe there is a custom behavior by AMD when you use them together?

6. All the following options returned empty:

journalctl -m --no-pager | grep "hardware err"
journalctl -m --no-pager | grep "Hardware err"
journalctl -m --no-pager | grep "Hardware Err"

If I search for "lockup", though:

7. I really rather not go through all this again, but for sure I will consider this.

For now with the settings I mentioned in the previous comment. It seems that disabling PBO actually did something for me. I'm using the computer for a long time now and no crash at all

Usually, if I'd ever get to see some improvement, this improvement would be gone after reboot. Since yesterday, after disabling PBO, I've rebooted several times and the computer stays without any freeze. Let's see if I can keep it that way.

My uptime information is:

21:57:42 up 4:40, 8 users, load average: 0.44, 0.12, 0.05

Until now, several reboots, at least 2 different kernel versions and no problems at all. Will try to keep it up for more time to see if anything changes. I'd dare to say this is the farthest it went without a lockup after it started freezing. Maybe disabling PBO actually fixed the problem?
