Kernel messages pertaining to iwlwifi

[I originally reported the following bug to the openSUSE bugzilla, but have been referred here. Please see https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1120251 for that bug report.]

WiFi driver iwlwifi crashes on startup with "Microcode SW error detected" on Lenovo P50 ThinkPad, please see attached what I believe are the relevant kernel messages.

Please run with tracing:

Turned out that the notebook's WiFi module supposedly was broken. Replacing it solved the problem. However, the driver's error message "Microcode SW error detected" is still misleading …

how did you notice it was broken?
Who told you to replace it?

Based on what data?
Comment 4 Rainer Klute 2019-01-24 17:21:08 UTC
My system admin suggested to just try to replace the WiFi module and see what would happen.
Comment 5 Emmanuel Grumbach 2019-01-24 17:34:22 UTC
Still an Intel module?
Same NIC?

Would still be nice to debug this...

I'll check with him and get back to you.
Comment 7 Emmanuel Grumbach 2019-01-25 06:22:11 UTC
You can just attach the output of lspci and dmesg.
