reproduced on v4.12 and test pass on v4.11

so this is a regression of v4.12

Hi Jianhong

Can you see if the proposed patch fixes the issue for you? As far as I can tell, it is not a regression, but a longstanding bug, so I'd like to make it a stable patch.
