Description Remy LABENE 2017-02-07 14:27:24 UTC
Hello,

I install a Debian linux 9 on my laptop MSI GP72 6QE but I have a bug with ACPI. When I use acpi=off to the grub boot the problem is solved but I lost many fonctionality (touchpad, battery informations, Fn + specific key ...).

The major problem is bbswitch for optimus technologie (with nouveau driver or nvidia driver). The laptop can't boot without acpi=off option in grub.

see my dmesg error below (nouveau + i915 driver without bbswitch) :

I'm not sure if the _REG problem is related to your functional issues.
In _OSI invocations, there is an EC operation region accessed:
            OperationRegion (EC, EmbeddedControl, Zero, 0x0100)
            Field (EC, ByteAcc, NoLock, Preserve)
            {
                ...
                Offset (0x34),
                    ,   4,
                OSVR,   4,
                ...
            }
And it is invoked in _SB.PCI0.LPCB
    Scope (_SB.PCI0.LPCB)
    {
        Device (EC)
        {
            Name (MYEC, One)
            Method (_REG, 2, NotSerialized) // _REG: Region Availability
            {
                If ((Arg0 == 0x03))
                {
                    MYEC = Arg1
                    If ((Arg1 == One))
                    {
                        If (_OSI ("Windows 2015"))

                        {
                            OSVR = One
                        }
                        ElseIf (_OSI ("Windows 2001 SP1"))
                        {
                            OSVR = One
                        }
                        ElseIf (_OSI ("Windows 2001 SP2"))
                        {
                            OSVR = One
                        }
                        ElseIf (_OSI ("Windows 2001 SP3"))
                        {
                            OSVR = One
                        }
                    }
                }
                ...
            }
        }
    }
It looks like, the issue is in _REG, OSVR (EC region) cannot be accessed.
While AFAICR, this is quite an old issue and there should be no such a problem in upstream.
The code now is:
acpi_install_address_space_handler
  acpi_ev_install_space_handler
  acpi_ev_execute_reg_method
Could you download a latest upstream kernel, enable CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG and rebuild the kernel.
Boot the kernel with "acpi.trace_state=enable log_buf_len=16M".
Try to save the whole boot log and upload it here.

Thanks
Lv

Are you willing to help us validate the _REG problem?

If you mean the bbswitch problem.
As far as I know, it is a bug in bbswitch code.

See this ACPICA error:
[ 3.205159] ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0.GFX0._DSM: Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package] (20160930/nsarguments-95)
[ 3.205267] ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._DSM: Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package] (20160930/nsarguments-95)
[ 3.205394] ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._DSM: Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package] (20160930/nsarguments-95)

And in the spec:

9.1.1 _DSM (Device Specific Method)
This optional object is a control method that enables devices to provide device specific control functions that are consumed by the device driver.
Arguments: (4)
Arg0 – A Buffer containing a UUID
Arg1 – An Integer containing the Revision ID
Arg2 – An Integer containing the Function Index
Arg3 – A Package that contains function-specific arguments

I've seen the bbswitch source, the code invoking _DSM looks wrong.
It's not an upstream module, so why don't you ask a fix in bbswitch first?

You're right, it's probably a bbswitch bug. The system crashes when I run a 3D application

Lv,

It will appear that yes, when I boot with grub option acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2009" the system don't freeze on battery.

dmesg with grub options acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2009"

Does acpi_rev_override=5 work for you.

I could remember a fixed issue reported by Peter Wu
https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bbswitch/issues/142

Let me check with him if the 2 bugs are bugs caused by the same reason.

Thanks

"Does acpi_rev_override=5 work for you."

No, the system freeze when I boot with the battery only.

Since you are still concerned, let me re-open.
Comment 25 Lv Zheng 2017-07-04 05:56:04 UTC
Reset to Drivers/Pci as ACPI problems are not related to the main issue.

The new debian 9.1 kernel adds the "irqbalance" package. The system seems more stable.

dmesg with the new daemon irqbalance

The new debian 9.1 kernel adds the "irqbalance" package. The system seems more stable. See my last dmesg.
