Description Christian Casteyde 2010-09-28 16:28:12 UTC
Acer Aspire 1511LMi
Slackware 64 13.1
Athlon 64 3GHz in 64bit mode
At least with vanilla kernel 33, 34 and 35

With recent kernels (this problem didn't occured a year ago IIRC), my laptop shuts down brutally after random time (from 5 minutes to nearly one hour) of uptime. It happens even if the power cord is plugged in, that is there is no power shortage from the battery. However, I'm now convinced this is an ACPI/battery problem, since I recompiled the kernel without ACPI battery support and the problem disappeared.

Bug that appeared around 2.6.33, I missed it at that time because I thought it was a battery/power problem.

It may be an buggy ACPI bios description or so, since I've already have had strange things with quite old kernels, however I remember Bluewhite 12.1 used to work. Maybe also an udev problem, who knows.
I do not have any log to diagnose, since the computer shuts down brutally.

I can give any information if necessary, or test some code if anybody has a clue.

by "shuts down brutally", do you mean that the power suddenly goes out
as if AC and DC are abruptly removed from the system?

This failure goes away when the acpi battery driver is excluded from
the system?

what is the most recent kernel that runs properly on this hardware today?

please attach the output from acpidump
and include the complete dmesg from a boot with the battery driver present.

Never mind, I've just got the problem without the battery driver either, and without battery plugged in (which so far was the ultimate solution).
I'm convinced now this is my power supply / mother board that's too old now, and that my laptop is dying. Sad for me but not a bug...
Closing the bug therefore.
