Hi all!
This is an old issue, and after various experiments we can be quite sure it's related to kernel things.
On my HP 6730s with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 (last stable kernel from the official repos) I have the following issue, and I have it since the very first kernel installed on this laptop (the one come with Hardy, I suppose).

The Fn+F9 shortcut, that should "MUTE/UNMUTE" the volume, doesn't work as expected. It effectively mute the volume, but no event comes out as result of key pressing: no acpi_listen, xev or showkey detects.
Obviously the volume icon doesn't reflect the change, too.

But, I repeat, the volume DOES mute/unmute!
