Description slonoinquisitor 2010-05-25 12:21:54 UTC
Pc with video card Sapphire HD 4850 systematically freezes in approx. 5 minutes after coldstart. Vertical stripes appear on the screen. If Ctrl-Alt-Del is pressed immediately, PC reboots successfully. The delay or other keyboard signal makes the PC freeze deadly. After reboot by Ctrl-Alt-Del or by reset button, PC always continues to work stable with no single freeze, hence the cold start is crucial to reproduce the bug.

The problem is absent in openSUSE 11.1 (kernel 2.6.27.7)! The problem exists in all newer distributions tested, including Ubuntu 10.04, openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 MS6, Mandriva 2010.0. Arch is x86_64. The problem was seen on two different hardware configurations with the same ATI video card; with Nvidia cards, no freezes. Video drivers tested include radeon, radeonhd and fglrx. However, since the PC freezes also in init 3 mode, and also with the kernel boot option 'nomodeset', the problem is not related to X/KMS.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Take the pc with Sapphire HD 4850 video card.
2. Cold boot the pc.
3. wait for approx. 5 minutes.
Actual Results:
the stripes cover the screen, pc freezes

Expected Results:
normal operation

The problem occurred several times at the Grub bootloader screen. Can it be kernel-related at all?

Nope
