Description Rafael J. Wysocki 2010-02-14 23:05:28 UTC
Subject : Dell video dies when booting 2.26.32.[78].
Submitter : David Ronis <ronis@ronispc.chem.mcgill.ca>
Date : 2010-02-14 1:07
Message-ID : 1266109622.11290.10.camel@montroll.chem.mcgill.ca

This entry is being used for tracking a regression from 2.6.32. Please don't
close it until the problem is fixed in the mainline.
Comment 1 Jesse Barnes 2010-02-19 20:46:49 UTC
Looks like you have CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=m, do you get a console when you load that driver or set it to 'y' instead?
Comment 2 David Ronis 2010-02-22 01:29:08 UTC
I reconfigured as:

CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY is not set
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION is not set
# CONFIG_FONTS is not set

and rebuilt/installed. Now the system seems to hang. When I boot, I get the lilo prompt, but when I select the new kernel, the screen dies as soon as the kernel loads and I can no longer access the machine remotely (this wasn't the case before).

One more thing. .config shows:

#
# Display device support
#
# CONFIG_DISPLAY_SUPPORT is not set

#

Is that correct?
Comment 3 David Ronis 2010-02-26 01:47:59 UTC
I tried 2.6.33 on this box; the problem is still there, and may even be worse. The box now hangs at some point after the screen goes blank.
Comment 4 Jesse Barnes 2010-02-26 22:55:15 UTC
Hm, ugly. Can you attach your lspci -vv output to this bug? Also a dmesg from a working boot (maybe one without i915 built in) would be good to get.
Comment 5 David Ronis 2010-02-28 02:39:56 UTC
Here's the lspci output (the dmesg output is later):

Next time please use attachments instead of dumping information directly into a comment.

Did you test anything later than 2.6.32.2 in the meantime?
Comment 7 David Ronis 2010-04-04 16:21:27 UTC
I've tried:

 2.6.32.7/ 2.6.32.8/ 2.6.33/	2.6.33.1/

All have the same problem. In addition, I've a similar problem on another slackware box (this one doesn't hang though), running 2.6.33.1.

I also just tried 2.6.33.2--same issue. This is still a regression.

drm/i915: Increase fb alignment to 64k

An untiled framebuffer must be aligned to 64k. This is normally handled
by intel_pin_and_fence_fb_obj(), but the intelfb_create() likes to be
different and do the pinning itself. However, it aligns the buffer
object incorrectly for pre-i965 chipsets causing a PGTBL_ERR when it is
    installed onto the output.

    Fixes:
KMS error message while initializing modesetting -
render error detected: EIR: 0x10 [i915]

drm/i915: Rebind bo if currently bound with incorrect alignment.

Whilst pinning the buffer, check that that its current alignment
matches the requested alignment. If it does not, rebind.

This should clear up any final render errors whilst resuming,
