  I built i915 driver into the kernel (I wanted to try KMS), and I get an oops on boot. If i915 is built as a module I am able to boot (except I get an oops in thinkpad_acpi->find_video, but booting goes fine). 

Regardless of KMS being enabled or not I do get this oops (which prevents further booting). I am just showing the oops with KMS enabled, because it switches to high resolution and I am able to see more of the oops message.

This redhat defect looks related..

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=508073

That defect indicated it was fixed with a later PCI update.. Have you tested a more recent RC ?

I have just built 2.6.31-rc2, and the oops is gone.
