Sound is not muted, and I believe the settings are correct, but it's hard to be sure, as each answer I find seems to have slightly differing advice, albeit a lot in common. The kernel is way too old. Try the latest 4.4.x or 4.5-rc kernel at first. If it still doesn't work, give alsa-info.sh output for further analysis.

Hi, you're saying that the kernel for the current long-term release of Ubuntu, version 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) is too old? Does that mean I have to upgrade to Ubuntu 15.04? If the problem is still seen with the latest upstream kernel, report back here.

Hi there Iwai, I tried upgrading to 4.5-rc, but got errors. I followed the instructions for 64-bit at: https://websetnet.com/install-linux-kernel-45-rc-3-ubuntu-1504-ubuntu-1404/ The download and unpack were fine, but the upgrade got firmware errors. I recommend you to ask it on some Ubuntu forum at first. It's a downstream issue, not what we do care here.

Hi Folks, I've solved the problem. Luckily, before the kernel upgrade wrecked my machine, I'd backed up the /home directories. After a lot of grief, I managed to install 15.10 from a flash drive (initially, the UEFI BIOS wouldn't let me boot from the CD or the flash drive). Changing the kernel from 3.13.74 to 4.2.0 seems to have nailed the problem. I now have sound and HDMI output. Thanks for all the help and advice. John M.
