I noticed that somewhere between 4.1-rc4 and 4.1 final my microphone input quit working on this machine, and that no capture controls appeared in alsamixer. Reverting this commit gets them back:

This has been already fixed in 4.2-rc1 by commit 831bfdf9520e389357cfeee42a6174a73ce7bdb7.
The backport to stable kernel is still being processed due to too many queued patches.
