Description Edward Amsden 2007-07-19 13:21:44 UTC
Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur:2.6.19 (Knoppix)
Distribution:ubuntu
Hardware Environment: intel ich4 chipset
Software Environment: ubuntu gutsy gibbon testing
Problem Description: ata_piix does not detect ide drives with intel ICHx chipsets. This problem has been the subject of numerous bug reports and forum posts in the ubuntu community. The most obvious manifestation is when a user succesfully begins to boot the ubuntu desktop cd, only to have it fail as it attempts to mount the file system. another manifestation occurs when a user with an ide or sata hard drive on an ICHx chipset machine attempts to boot after upgrading the kernel from 2.6.17 (in ubuntu 6.10) to 2.6.20 (in ubuntu 7.04)

Steps to reproduce: attempt to boot ubuntu with kernel 2.6.20 - 2.6.22 on a machine with an intel ide chipset. Any drives attached to the ide bus will not be recognized. I am writing this on an ubuntu machine which uses the ich4 ide bus to connect to the cd drive, but a scsi bus for the hard drive. This necessitated a netboot installation, and the installed system is still unable to utilize the hard disk.

Here is the dmesg|grep ata output (with two irrelevant lines containing the word "data" removed)

That sounds rather serious?

libata problem - reassigning

Edward, you may want to check if IDE driver (module piix) works fine by disabling libata (CONFIG_ATA=n) anabling CONFIG_IDE=y and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_PIIX=y.
Comment 3 Tejun Heo 2007-07-19 23:19:59 UTC
Please report the result of 'lspci -nnvvvxxx'.
Comment 4 Edward Amsden 2007-07-20 10:03:12 UTC
confirmed, compiled new kernel from 2.6.22 source, disabled module ata_piix, enabled ide_piix.

Comment 5 Edward Amsden 2007-07-20 10:04:42 UTC
the ide_piix module is able to access the cdrom drive. This drive is present as hdc.
Comment 6 Edward Amsden 2007-07-20 10:09:53 UTC
correction to comment #1, the installed system can utilized the hard disk, but not the cdrom drive

Please post boot kernel log for both ata_piix and piix cases. Thanks.
Comment 9 Edward Amsden 2007-07-23 09:57:43 UTC
the ata_piix kernel is tainted (ubuntu with nvidia driver module). I am blacklisting the module and will reboot without it, then post the log.
Comment 10 Edward Amsden 2007-07-23 11:05:00 UTC
ata_piix enabled kernel (untainted)

[cc'ing Alan]

Hmmm... Apparently the Seagate drive has some problem with its TF altstatus register and IDE is working around it by using the status register during probe. It seems we'll need to add similar work around in libata too. In the posted log, there's no ata2.xx configuration messages. Please execute 'dmesg > dmesg.log' after boot and attach the file here (please don't post inline, it's hard to read due to line wrapping).

Comment 14 Edward Amsden 2007-07-24 08:07:41 UTC
the seagate is the HD, and is attached via SCSI. This HD works...
The IDE CDROM is what is not working, see comment #6
Comment 15 Andrew 2007-07-24 20:51:39 UTC
After much Googling, I could not find the code that prints "port disabled. ignoring."; however, I have worked with ATA drivers on other projects that completely disable if the primary controller is disabled. Is this code the same?

Also, I didn't see you comment where the CD drive in question is connected to. Is it ata1 or ata2? If you plug it into ata1, does it work?
Comment 16 Edward Amsden 2007-07-25 05:59:51 UTC
it is on ata2. ata1 had no drives on it and was disabled in the bios. I enabled it, but the problem persists. I will try plugging the CDROM into ata1.
Comment 17 Edward Amsden 2007-07-25 06:13:04 UTC
I plugged the cdrom into ata1, it is now enabled as it was in comment #16, but still not detected by the kernel.

Comment 20 Persio Barros 2007-07-31 17:48:56 UTC
Hi,

I think I have the same problem here. Installed Gutsy on a Lenovo 3000 V200 notebook, which has a sata HD and an ide CD/DVD RW. After install the CD drive is not found at boot. I can enable it with "modprobe ide-generic", but then I can't set DMA to it.
The IDE controller is from Intel but a different model. From lspci:

Also, I noted that with kernel 2.6.19 in Knoppix, the DVD drive is recognized without problem.

I tried the proposed patch to libata, but the result is the same. The problem is still here. But I am not sure that I did it correctly, since I'm no kernel guru. Basically I followed the directions in http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_ubuntu_p2 .
I downloaded the kernel sources, then applied the patch, used the Ubuntu .config, compiled and installed the modified kernel. The boot log is attached.

Hope this helps.
Comment 21 Tejun Heo 2007-08-01 03:16:46 UTC
Persio, your problem is different. Try 'modprobe ata_piix'.
Comment 22 Persio Barros 2007-08-01 06:56:25 UTC
Nope. It didn't work. Neither with the original Gutsy kernel (upgraded today: 2.6.22-9), nor with the modified libata kernel. Also noted that the ata_piix module loading (and unloading) is not reported in the system logs.
Any ideas? Should I fill a new bug report?
Thanks,
Persio
Comment 23 Tejun Heo 2007-08-01 07:09:05 UTC
Yes, please open a separate bug report and assign it to me. In the new bug report, please attach the result of 'lpsci -nnvvv', 'dmesg' and 'cat /proc/ioports'.

The patch just adds several diagnostic messages so that I can tell what's going on. Let's see.

Ummm... devmask is 0x0 indicating writing a value to a TF regsiter and reading it back didn't return the written value. ie. There doesn't seem to be any device attached to the channel.

Can you please apply the attached patch and report the result?

Edward, can you try Bartlomiej's suggestion? Disable libata and try IDE piix driver and see whether that works.

That would be a nice change to get in anyway Tejun as it'll make pre-ATA devices (ST412) work except for needing identify sorting [and we can figure out later if its ATA or ATAPI from ID_ATA v ID_ATAPI)
Comment 35 Tejun Heo 2007-08-06 09:18:32 UTC
libata already does fallback onto the other IDENTIFY on device error. Would that be enough for the oldies?

DMESG from kernel with ata fallback patch

Comment 37 Alan 2007-08-06 12:42:00 UTC
identify as ATA failure followed by identify as ATAPI attempt will sort out early CD-ROM devices correctly. It won't sort out early ATA devices and pre-ATA devices where IDENTIFY is optional and may not be present at all.

Nothing to do with the traces here though - they look very broken hardware wise indeed even with old IDE.
