Problem Description: I've two motherboards with the same chipset MCP51. After system is up (after 10minutes or hours) the ethernet device break off run. I see ethernet interface on but i can't ping any host. I tried reload ethernet device (and module) but nothing. My system it's isolate from the network.

My logs see me naught.

This take my system unusable.

Can you try to turn off all advanced features through ethtool or module params? ie. checksum offloads, MSI interrupts, etc.

Ok, I didn't realize this was MCP51. That does not have advanced features anyways.

One thing to try out is to reduce the number Tx descriptors in the Tx ring. I want to bring it down to 8 and then try 16, etc. You will need to modify the source file and change the following define:
#define TX_RING_DEFAULT		64
to
#define TX_RING_DEFAULT		8

then recompile and load the new driver. If you need help in doing that, let me know.

Hi,

  What do you use the r8169 driver for ?

I see no 816x device in the output of your lspci (and you do not want to shrink
the size of the TX ring in the r8169 driver btw).

Building a modified driver seems to be answered on $SEARCH_ENGINE
by performing a search with "debian kernel compile documentation".

I compiled forcedeth.c with: TX_RING_DEFAULT 8
my system doesn't ping any host,
I recompiled with 16 but after one hour of transfer files the ethernet again break off :-//

Pol, you mentioned to me in email the following:

Problem is said to happen from 2.6.19-1.2895 (and supposely not in 2.6.18-1.2798)
Those bad changes happens here on MCP55 so. Both AMD64.

I had this on Kubuntu 8.04 and with the newer kernel (something like 2.6.22 ) on Kubuntu 7.10. On Gentoo with all the kernels I have tested.

My HW is MCP55 on ASUS P5N32-E SLI (plus) with Intel Quad core Q6600 (2.4GHz)

I originally had this so that the device would pretend to be working, but actually didn't send anything out.

I then found out that if I disable msi and msix I will get the behaviour that the others in this bug have experienced.

This was recoverable with: "rmmod forcedeth && modprobe forcedeth msi=0 msix=0"
but it eventually started to do the same thing. The first symton would be the nfs server not responding messages. Then it will respond again and work for a while. After syncling this through for a while it will finally dump the tx ring and after that no packets are send anymore untill I rmmod and modprobe, which will fix it for a while.

Then yesterday I only disabled msix and everything has worked over 16 hours after that without any of the symptoms I had earlier.

Now I tested with NAPI rx polling.

If rx pollin NAPI is enabled then msi=[0|1] msix=[0|1] don't work.

Hope this helps to find what's wrong.

I just read but didn't understand your last comment.
Does RX polling/NAPI work with msi=0 or msi=1?
ie interrupt delivery method doesn't matter since "RX Polling/NAPI" doesn't use interrupts (NIC events) to check for RX packets and this feature is just broken.

It seems forcedeth has been worked on quite a bit over that last couple of months. I'm looking at:
