I think I'm at the right place to report video card frustrations.
Radeon HD450 fails to work out of the box with any Linux.
With Debian Wheezy I need to edit the grub line starting with linux and add vga=791 to do anything.  vga=771 fails
With Knoppix 7.0 I need vga=771 and that's okay, but vga=791 the left half of screen is on right and right on left.  The cursor moves to right falls off the screen and re-appears on left side.  Very strange.
With DebianMint I need vga=771 or 791 to get it to work.
On my Acer Aspire laptop with a Radeon HD6310 I do not need any of this vga= stuff.
I am sure that this is not a driver problem.  All the vga=xxx does is kick it somewhere so that I loads the driver.
My Motherboard is M2V-Mx from Asus and once the /etc/default/grub is fixed with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="vga=791" or 771 it's okay. (sudo update-grub of course)
I recently junked my Nvidia 8500GT video because the driver for that became sick, the worst feature was not being able to display the layout of the pcb tool unless I disabled the driver and used cpu sw rendering on the video but that's an other story.  Ian.

Please attach your xorg log and dmesg output.  What kernels have you tested with?

LinuxMint15 Kernel 3.8.0-19-64 was fine on the laptop.  On my desktop 
with the HD6450 I gave up trying to get a live boot.
Linux debian Kernel 3.2.0-4-64 but need vga=771 to get a video and 
1600:900 resolution.  dmsg attached.
Linux Knoppix kernel 3.6.11-64 Log attached, vga=771 okay, 791 left and 
right of screen crossed.  Could not get 1600:900 resolution.
Linux debian wheezy kernel 3.2.0.4 log attached, would only boot with 
vga=791, looks good but not used it, hardly at all.
     I hope that I have given you the logs that you need.  If not please 
let me know where to find them.  I'm sure that this is a problem with 
the boot process, all that the vga=xxx does is kick it into the right 
condition to load the driver.  Thanks for you attention.  Regards Ian.

Well 2 years later things have changed.  That set of HW died and I got a 2nd hand Acer box with an Intel 2 core chip. it's a bit old so I upped the RAM to 4gig DDR2 and put in my HD6450 and it works really good, straight out of the box.  In fact much better than my new Gigabyte E2100N mother board which has slow video response with a built in HD8210.  In both systems I'm running Debian Mint betsy.  Odd that the new mother board with 8 gig DDR3 is so sluggish.  I need the courage to try a different driver.

Any way my issue with the HD6450 is no more.  Thanks for the help.

I'm the originator and with my newer HW as of 2019 no problems.  Thanks to all Ian.
