Description Nik Martin 2013-03-07 19:15:42 UTC
I have a new laptop from a company called Avatar, model AVIU-145A2. It has a new Elan Tech touchpad that has several new features, like multi-touch, swipe-from-edge gestures, corner tapping, continuous scrolling, etc. On the mainline 3.8.2 kernel, the touchpad works, but is detected as a normal mouse, and every few seconds when the touchpad is being used, this is output in /var/log/syslog:

The touchpad functions as a normal mouse, without any feautures, but tap-to-click is on, and is so sensitive, almost any touch of the touchpad causes a click event.

Same touchpad/firmware version on my Fujitsu Celsius H730 on kernel 3.14

Without CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_ELANTECH, it works like you described just without hangs and dmesg output. I only see that output if CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_ELANTECH is on, but then the touchpad does not work at all, same for the trackpoint and hardware mouse buttons. I have not tested yet if this is related to UEFI, which seems to be a problem for xhci_hcd on some machines.

Bug #48161 contains a patch, but that does not change anything for me.

Hi I have the same machine than Nik Martin (AVATAR AVIU-145A2) and the same issue.

So I send you my "dmesg i8042.debug=1" (My kernel version is 3.13.0-35-generic

Thank for your help

Hi, I'm having a similar issue to the one described in this bug on an Acer ES1-512 laptop. There's 4-5 open bugs about Elantech touchpads not working, and the main reason I'm "attaching" myself to this specific bug is because this is the only bug that doesn't mention a specific laptop model in the bug title.

I previously filed this bug on freedesktop.org, but was informed that this is most likely a kernel-level bug, since I'm not getting any input events from the device node at all.

Thus, I'm going to copy+paste the description I wrote on https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103551
==========

Distribution is a heavily modified Ubuntu that I use for my friends & family, based on Ubuntu 17.10.

A friend of the family recently presented me with another laptop to "fix", and I promptly nuked Windows and friends from it and got it booting on Ubuntu, however the Elantech touchpad does not work as expected.

Laptop is a Acer ES1-512.

I've tried xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, evdev, and libinput, on both Xorg 1.19.5 and under the GNOME Wayland session provided by Ubuntu.

The touchpad does not even show up unless I boot with i8042.nopnp. I've tried a whole host of combinations of the various i8042 kernel parameters, but so far have been unsuccessful at getting any event output from any listener, like evemu-record, libinput debug-events, or `input-events 6`. They all print something akin to "Waiting for events", and then no matter where I touch or click on the touchpad, nothing happens.

I've also tried setting modprobe parameters for psmouse like `proto=exps` and `proto=imps`, and =exps seems to make the touchpad appear as a generic PS/2 Mouse, but still it produced no events.

dmesg output

Attached a complete dmesg dump.

Other information that might be useful;
- I've tried the `echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/reg_07` trick mentioned in a different bug #
- The laptop exclusively boots in "Legacy" mode
- The BIOS has a setting with a name like "Touchpad Support" with two options: Basic or Advanced. I'm unable to change this from Advanced to Basic, because the BIOS simply resets whenever the computer is rebooted or turned off+on. I've even changed the BIOS battery, and I've had the computer completely disassembled (so without any power source) for an hour before reassembling it, and the BIOS still resets every time it boots.

The reason I mention that last one is because I read somewhere that the elan i2c driver only detects the touchpad when this specific BIOS setting is set to 'Basic'. But the touchpad is detected, it just doesn't produce any events.
