Dell Vostro 3460 seems to have an ALPS touchpad[1], and following the dmesg from arch[2], it does recognizes the PS/2 controller, without trying any other devices first. So, trying a newer kernel with i8042.debug would help to track down the problem, or at least if tell if the problem was fixed.
