This entry is being used for tracking a regression from 2.6.37. Please don't
close it until the problem is fixed in the mainline.

Firstly:

I will try from what Takashi mentioned:

Then confirm if this workaround is correct before I go further in providing alsa-info.sh. I'm now following 2.6.39-0.rc6.git0.0.fc16.x86_64 or 2.6.39-rc6.git0.

So I have tried it, same problem, no amount of volume lets me use the external microphone it is just too quiet even PulseAudio Volume Control shows it barely moving the volume meter.

[   24.235343] ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:3706: hda_codec: model 'hp' is selected

Plugging in a internal microphone/headset I can hear my voice fine (aside from machine noise interference/and noise).

Please give the alsa-info.sh output with model=hp and plugging a mic jack.
Also, please run the older working kernel and get alsa-info.sh output in the same situation.  In that way, we can track the regression.
