The system in question has 4 pcie slots on the motherboard. The first slot 'long blue, for what that is worth', has the issue. And of course that is what we tried first. When we use the other 3 slots (shorter and white-ish), then the cards load the driver in 1x adapter boards as well as all 4 in one of the 4x adapter boards. So, I guess it is something funny with the PCI bus. Please let me know what info I can send to help debug this. Indeed this seems to be related to the PCI bus. The issue reported by the firmware is SYSASSERT 0x222 which is a timeout on a DRAM transfer. Does it work if you have a single card on this slot? What about other combinations of using some slots or others? We tried single NICs in several different adapter boards and all failed in the bad slot. Every combination we tried in the other slots works. Ath10k NICs, Intel 10G NICs, and other cards work fine in the bad slot. Run in to the same error, but in a system with a single ax200 wifi pci card. The card is in the same slot that has been used for another intel wifi pci card (7260) daily for 3 years with ZERO problems. Motherboard: asus maximus gene viii. This is in the x16 slot which the bios shows as working in x1. I also tried setting the slot to "Gen1" (from the default Gen3), no change. The chassis I use does not allow testing the card in any of the other PCI slots, unfortunately. In my case the output of lscpci seems to show the ax200 card a little different: 01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 2723 (rev 1a) Some times I got a different sysassert, 0. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205123 It seems that the PCI implementation in AX200 is not compatible with the X16 PCIE slot in some motherboards (my case: asus maximus gene viii), but works ok in X1/X4 and X8 slots. At least with the firmware currently available (versions 46 and 48) Here's a another report of a user confirming that the PCIE ax200 card did not work in an X16 slot but did work ok in other slots of lower speed. On an Asus motherboard different from mine, and on windows. https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/crve6w/z97_board_with_ax200_wifi_6_expansion_card_issues/ Hopefully Intel will notice this problem... And hopefully the problem is fixable via new firmware. In some cases the only available slot happens to be X16. Note that even after manually setting the X16 slot as Gen1 in BIOS, the same error happens. The motherboard reports correctly that the card is X1 when inserted Just as a followup on this, I had a chance to test this weekend with a friend. Same ax200, same adapter, same computer, works in X1 port, works in X4 port, doesn't work in x16 port. Sadly didn't have an X8 port to test all possibilities, but this does seem to be a problem specific to X16 pcie ports. doesn't work on Gen2/x8 neither. Seems works only on x1/x4 PCIe slot. I did the similar test on my linux box which has X1/X4/X16 slots and AX200 can come up on X1/X4 not X16. I tried on another linux box which only has Gen3/x8 and it did not work neither. The detailed of log message are here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205499 @Luca Coelho Any update on that issue? I think I'm stuck with this issue too: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1201963/ Any feedback from the Intel team on this one? Is ax200 a lost cause on X16 slots? Still looking forward to update my wifi card and still hoping I can stay with Intel wifi chipsets I also face same problem with Ubuntu 20.04 kernel 5.4.0-26 and 5.6.7-050607.
