Usually the system won't boot at all, producing many MB of error logs instead. Occasionally, depending on the kernel config and the phase of the moon, it'll get to a login prompt, but the system is mostly unusable.

Booting with 'pci=noacpi' prevents the errors but disables sleep and hibernation functions.

Kernel version 4.14.119 doesn't have this problem. Stock Debian Stretch works okay.

Kernel version 4.19 in Debian Buster does have this problem. I've also tried the 5.0.10 and 5.1 kernels, which have the same problem, and Ubuntu 19.04 which also has the same problem.

Bug #114201 looks similar to this, so I tried disabling the Watchdog completely in .config, but that didn't help. I haven't been able to identify any values in the .config files from one version to the next that would suggest a root cause there.

I'm having trouble building kernel 4.15rc1, but I'll keep trying to nail down the version that introduces this bug.

I'm quite eager to get this fixed and will try to respond promptly with additional information as needed and test any other suggestions.

Oops, the "disable Watchdog" suggestion came up in a different bug report, where there was previously a conflict between WDAT_ and RTC that caused GPE errors.

Using the boot parameter pci=nommconf seems to boot as a work around. Im not sure what the downsides of using that command is. Found the solution on reddit.
Comment 7 Rob 2019-06-13 08:00:19 UTC
Thank you *so* much for that. That option never showed up in my searches. Confirmed that on my machine that option allows it to boot and suspend/hibernate are working, along with the function keys previously disabled by 'pci=noacpi'.

From what I can find, 'pci=nommconf' just disables (or tries to disable?) memory-mapped access to some hardware. The kernel still uses an older fallback for accessing it. I'd guess that at the worst case you might see some performance degradation for some devices?

At least the device is usable now.

Try pci=nommconf people are having good luck with that.

virtualization not working and performance down after pci=nommconf option enabled.

What kind of virtualization are you trying? I was able to load up Puppy Linux 64 bit in virtualbox inside of Pop_OS.

I got VMware Workstation 15 running in Pop_OS with puppy linux. Now did you make the same newbie mistake I did and tried to install vmware by double clicking the file in file manager? I searched google and you're suppose to install it via terminal by

chmod +x VMWare_file.bundle
sudo ./VMWare_file.bundle

I am a ubuntu user and I have installed vmware in kernel 4.17.x. After setting the nommconf option in kernel 4.18.x, the symptom of reinstalling vm module still appears when booting. If you boot into kernel 4.17.x again, you can use vmware normally.

Sorry, Virtualization is not a problem.
VMware (virtualization) has been normalized after reinstall.

I just fixed an issue that caused LG gram to boot with 17 inch acpi error. This can be solved by configuring the BIOS. How to set up to share on gihub.

Confirmed. The steps (copied from Louis's link):

1. At boot time, press F2 to enter bios.
2. Press ctrl + alt + F7 to switch to advanced mode.
3. Select the advanced tab.
4. Select Intel Advanced Menu.
5. Select Thunderbolt (TM) Configuration.
6. Select Discrete Thunderbolt (TM) Configuration.
7. Select Thunderbolt (TM) OS Select.
8. Set Windows 10 Thunderbolt support to Disabled (ed: or "Enabled"). After a delay of about 5 seconds after setting, the confirmation message for saving the setting changes appears.
9. Save the changed settings and reboot.

--

I tested this further on my system and found that I can reliably boot with changing the "Windows 10 Thunderbolt support" setting to "Enabled" (without having to set "pci=nommconf" in grub). The only setting here that causes the ACPI errors is "Enable +RTD3", so RTD3 seems to be the culprit.

It seem to take several seconds for my BIOS to render the change. Be patient.

RTD3 is "Runtime D3", a sub-milliwatt power state supported by some devices: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/prepare-hardware-for-modern-standby

So disabling RTD3 shouldn't have any real consequences.

can you show me where the following information is got?
I'm wondering which specific commit introduces the regression, pci? or the thunderbolt driver?
But it does not seem to be an ACPI problem anyway.

dhedlund at https://github.com/dhedlund/kernel-patch-lg-gram-17 identified it as 84c8b58ed3addf17d3beb2e5037b001ffa65c5ef (https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/84c8b58ed3addf17d3beb2e5037b001ffa65c5ef).

Prior to that commit, these laptops are able to boot without ACPI errors. dhedlund created a patch which can be applied to revert that commit, which gets the current kernel to boot without ACPI errors.

> But it does not seem to be an ACPI problem anyway.

There appear to be two problems here: one is ACPI-related, the other is a conflict with RTD3.

Disabling RTD3 allows us to boot without ACPI errors. However, the ACPI error reporting system wasn't having this problem before 84c8b58ed3addf17d3beb2e5037b001ffa65c5ef, and it probably shouldn't be behaving this way even with RTD3 support enabled.

Ultimately both causes probably need to be addressed. It seems likely that future hardware updates might also trigger this ACPI error reporting bug. I wish I could help more with this, but I'm not familiar enough with this area to be useful.

Mika, any thought on this?

Add debugging to ACPI hotplug driver

Disabling RTD3 basically makes it to use ACPI based hotplug only which is pretty much the same as revert of 84c8b58ed3addf17d3beb2e5037b001ffa65c5ef. Clearly we are not doing something the BIOS expects and that causes the issue.

Can you try the attached patch so that you also add "acpiphp.dyndbg" to the kernel command line? Then attach full dmesg of the boot (assuming it boots up).

I can confirm that a very similar bug is affecting my HP Omen 15-dh0002nl, I can boot my system using acpi=off (that completely disables the nvidia GPU) or a milder pci=nommconf (that leave only the touchpad disabled). I can compile and patch a kernel so if you need something specific to test I can help you.
Comment 26 Mika Westerberg 2019-09-30 11:49:35 UTC
Hi, can you first try simply revert 84c8b58ed3addf17d3beb2e5037b001ffa65c5ef? If that does not help then your issue is different.
Comment 27 Valerio Passini 2019-09-30 23:30:16 UTC
I have downloaded and patched the kernel using this patch https://github.com/dhedlund/kernel-patch-lg-gram-17. It's a lot of time since I used git, so I went through a easier way for me. I applied the patch to a 5.3.1 kernel which needed the pci=nommconf option at boot and it booted without major problems (obviously I removed that option from grub to test the difference).
Comment 28 Mika Westerberg 2019-10-01 08:20:28 UTC
Hi Valerio,

By "patch" you mean you took v5.3.1 and reverted commit 84c8b58ed3addf17d3beb2e5037b001ffa65c5ef? Or you applied the patch in attachment?
Comment 29 Valerio Passini 2019-10-01 08:42:42 UTC
Hi Mika, I applied the patch in the attachment to kernel 5.3.1.
Comment 30 Mika Westerberg 2019-10-01 08:48:11 UTC
OK, thanks for clarification. Can you attach full dmesg with the patch applied?
Comment 31 Valerio Passini 2019-10-01 17:45:00 UTC
Hi Mika. I'm unable to attach anything to the message so I'm going to copy/past what you asked for. I must stress that I customized my kernel config disabling a lot of functions and drivers that I don't need, especially debug code. So if you need a more detailed dmesg output or some specific test, you should say what debug option I should activate.
Here sudo dmesg output:

dmesg output from a 5.3.1 kernel patched with a revert 84c8b58ed3ad
Comment 35 Valerio Passini 2019-10-02 10:21:51 UTC
Thank you, Mika, for the advice, even if it's not the best in terms of usability, the button is there!
You can download the attachment now.
Comment 36 Mika Westerberg 2019-10-02 10:56:34 UTC
In your comment you say 5.3.1 kernel patched with revert 84c8b58ed3ad but I thought you are running 5.3.1 kernel with the patch in attachment of this bug. I need dmesg from the latter because it includes additional debug log that hopefully helps in debugging this.

dmesg output from a 5.3.1 kernel patched acpiphp_debug.diff
Comment 38 Valerio Passini 2019-10-02 13:11:53 UTC
Hi Mika, I patched the kernel with you acpiphp_debug.diff. Look in the attachments section for the dmsg output.
Comment 39 Mika Westerberg 2019-10-03 12:15:33 UTC
Thanks for the logs. Can you try the following patch on top of v5.3.1 and see if it helps?

https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/1105955/

Let me know if you want me to attach it to this bug as well.

dmesg output from a 5.3.1 kernel patched acpiphp_debug.diff + v8-6-6-PCI-Fix

Hi Mark, I was unsure if you wanted a log from a kernel patched with both the v8-6-6-PCI-Fix and your patch to acpi, but this is what I understood.
Patched the kernel with:
1) v8-6-6-PCI-Fix-bug-resulting-in-double-hpmemsize-being-assigned-to-MMIO-window.diff and
2)acpiphp_debug.diff
Comment 41 Mika Westerberg 2019-10-04 07:40:01 UTC
I meant that only apply

https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/1105955/

on top of v5.3.1. No other patches and no additional command line options. The expectation is that it fixes your issue and if not we need to investigate further.

kernel panic picture taken after booting kernel 5.3.1 patched with v8-6-6-PCI-fix

Test done: it's a failure. I don't know if you can extract some information from the picture.
Comment 43 Mika Westerberg 2019-10-07 11:46:47 UTC
:-( I was kind of hoping it would solve the issue. Well, then we need to investigate further. If you take plain v5.3.1 kernel and pass "hpiosize=0" in the kernel command like, does it work?

OK, so I see it did not help :( I'll try to come up another patch to test soon.

acpiphp-native-resource-fix applied to 5.3.1 kernel

It boots! I'm supposing that you want the dmesg output anyway.

OK, great. We would still need to understand what actually fails there before sending the patch upstream. I will be on vacation next week but after that I will cook another patch that hopefully reveals bit more.

Allocate resources directly under non-hotplug port in case of native

I think I know what is going on here. From your logs the root port is notified by ACPI pretty soon after EC has been enabled. This happens before PNP resources are allocated. Now, pci_assign_unassigned_bridge_resources() does not really take into account that the devices are already handled by the BIOS and tries to re-allocate resources so that everything fits there which means that it opens I/O bridge window for the root port. Since PNP resources are not allocated this I/O window occupies range 0x1000 - 0x2000 which is supposed to be used for things like ACPI GPE bits.

Can you try the attached patch and see if that works and the system boots? If it does, please attach dmesg as well. I kind of expect this to work.

Hi, can you test one more thing? Try with 5.3.x (no patches) and pass "pci=hpiosize=0" to the command line. The one I suggested before (without pci=) is not correct.

Hi Mika, I have tried your option (pci=hpiosize=0) on Debian stock kernel (5.3.x series) and a 5.3.8 custom kernel (without your patch) and they both behave in this way: they boot to the point of getting to the Display Manager but only the pointer is visible, if I try to switch to the other terminals (ctrl+alt+F3/F4/F5 etc.) there is only a blank screen. The system is running, but it's completely useless. Anyhow it's possible to reboot it by pressing ctrl+alt+del 7 times.

Can you help me get this patch so that I can apply it to ubuntu 19.10 on the 5.3.0-24-generic kernel?

Hi sealse,
I'm not sure that your problem is the same if none of the above acpi pci options is working for you. Anyhow, you should recompile the kernel to apply the patch. If you don't know how to do it you should follow this guide:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel
Probably you should work around secure-boot and signing the kernel too.
Once you have downloaded the kernel tar.gz from kernel.org you can apply the patch named:
acpiphp-allocate-resources-directly-under-non-hotplug-port.diff.

You can find it in message #59.
Comment 68 Mika Westerberg 2019-12-09 08:44:06 UTC
Alternatively you can take mainline v5.5-rc1. The patch should be included there.

I installed kernels from here:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.5-rc1/

All the same, I logged some aspects of the error:

[ 0.266512] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve symbol [\_SB.PCI0.I2C2.TPD0], AE_NOT_FOUND (20191018/dswload2-159)

But ubunta booted without aspi = off with normal resolution and with a working touchpad.

However, I was unable to log into the graphical shell. In the system log wrote:

IMO your bug seems different.
Regarding your graphical shell: probably you have Nvidia and at the moment their drivers don't compile against 5.5 kernel.
